I realize the middle of the week isn't the greatest time to migrate servers, but it needs to get done... this temporary server can be extremely slow, especially at peak loads.

Nothing will go down, other than for about 2 minutes at 3AM EST time (about 26 minutes from now) while I make the switch.

The forum's just gonna be a bit slow(er) for a few hours until the DNS propagates, since it will be accessing the database on the new server from over the interwebs.

The new server IP is 208.43.115.82

If you feel like it, you can add that to your hosts file.

So, the 2 minute blackout is over? When I do a reverse DNS lookup on 208.43.115.82, it says this is howtogeek.com. So, I guess my DNS servers, at AT&T Yahoo, are already updated.

Well the reverse DNS has been in place for a few days now... what happens if you do a DNS lookup on howtogeek.com ?

Aha! I see what's going on here:

>ping howtogeek.com

Pinging howtogeek.com [64.13.232.106] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 64.13.232.106: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=52

Yeah, that's the old server IP... I imagine loading the forum is pretty slow :)

It fooled me though, because I tried using http://208.43.115.82 and it resolved back to howtogeek.com, so I thought my DNS servers had updated. Anyway, it doesn't feel slow.

June 5, 2PM EST - response time excellent and I don't loose any postings any more (took the habit of copying them so that I could paste them back several times). Thank you Geek.

I sure hope this is the last time for a long time... hopefully no more data centers explode on us!
