Hey guys,
This is the most peculiar problem i have seen so far wid my laptop
Well, to begin with this is a Dell Inspiron 1525 2Gb RAM and core 2duo......I have installed Ubuntu Jaunty on it
It had been running smoothly since a bit of time now.
Today, when i tried to boot it it showed a slowed progress bar on the DELL SCREEN. At the same time the CD drive ejected itself ....i put it bk...it came out again. tHen there was a msg that quickly flashed away, but i could make out that it said "No hard disk drive found"
Then the Ubuntu boot screen appeared and got stuck on "Starting up" and gave an error (error=-16)
then after a few more tries i pushed the escape key to enter the GRUB menu and loaded into the recovery mode. There sumhow i cud boot the system threw that way by selecting the resume boot option.
After a few more boots like that my system booted perfectly normally.
Then this same thing....and then...no other problems on the regular system.
Now.....i have booted normally this time. I can't really figure out the problem....
I even tried to refix the HDD thinking that it mite have loosened up

Guys...i need help...
Thx in advance

Try to boot to BIOS, select the hard disk and run a SMART short and long self test and check if every thing is fine with the hard disk.

abhs94, it's just a sad fact that we don't have a lot of Linux experts hanging out here at HTG forums. For now, you will get more attention from Ubuntu Support, such as the community forums, where there are plenty of folks who have Linux/Windows dual-boot installs.

I think that your problem is a virus.
I have a virus on one of mine computers once,
I completely turned it off,
I scanned it once with an installed anti-virus,
---NO RESULTS---
Turned it off again,
Forgot about it for a long time,
Tried to turn it on again,
BIOS cannot find any boot files e.g. BOOTMGR
It rejects anything even ISOs.
My thought on the subject---> You've got a virus.
Try to reinstall Ubuntu.
If it rejects it, well, bye, bye, computer...

yeah, I'm all vista.

Dell would help if your in warranty and Ubuntu is the original OS. If not then they will most likely tell you to reinstall the original OS before they help you. They are a little hard to understand for my liking tho..

@abhs94,

Echo on what ScottW said. The Ubuntu forums are EXCELLENT and very active. I suspect you'll get a precise answer there within a day . . . would be surprised if not.

(BTW, I also have a Dell . . . Inspiron 15n . . . 4GB RAM, AND UBUNTU PREINSTALLED. Have not had any problem as you're describing. It could be a virus but I highly doubt it . . . Linux viruses are mostly "proof of concept" and there are very few if any lose in the wild. Try the Ubuntu forums.)
