Rundll32 problem

I have Vista and Internet Explorer 8. When I try to open Internet Explorer I get a message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem'.
Then another box appears:
Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the problem to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Another box appeared: Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Nothing has appeared since.
Please can you help? I still can't access the Internet with the problem computer so am using a friend's laptop.

Welcome to HTG ,

Did you install any new software recently ?

Have you run Full AV and AS scans ?

Hello GuiltySpark,
No new software.
One evening I checked email, then shut the computer down. Next day I switched on the computer and tried to get onto the Net. That's when the problem started.
Not sure what AV and AS scans are.
Have done a SFC/scannow. Is that the same of one of the scans you mention?
Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable about computers.

AV = Anti Virus

AS = Anti Spyware

hello again GuiltySpark,
Yes I have run AV with Norton and that was fine.
Not sure if Norton did the Anti Spyware. It just did a scan and said everything was fine. Is there a seperate scan for Anti Spyware?

Download the free version of this : http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/ and run in Safe Mode.

And the free version of this : http://superantispyware.com/ run in normal mode.

I cant download anything and i cant open my files. and then when i try to open my files it keep saying windows file wont open go to internet to installed program i did that but it want let me download nothing please help. should i installed a new windows 7
