I would use a switch rather than doubling up the routers. Attach them Modem > Switch > Router . Then you have additional ports on the router and on the switch. This is a cheap 5 port switch, but there are other switches that have more ports (for more money).

Wouldn't it be better to go Modem > Router > Switch to avoid bypassing the router's DNS, port forwarding and security settings?

Sure, you will have wireless. And Modem > Router > Switch is a good idea to benefit from the router's firewall for all ports.

You can, of course use a second router as a switch. Disable the DHCP and hook it up LAN port to LAN port and make it's primary IP different from the main router.. However, you would then have only 7 ports and not 8 as the second router would be attached on one of the LAN Ports.

I have three routers and a switch in my setup in order to have ports on all sides of the room as well as having 8 ports continuously in use for four computers, a NAS & Magic jack, one port to the switch and another to pass it further to the two routers. All routers are available for wireless connection as well as 3 port switch. All DHCP comes from the first/main router. IP of the 2nd and 3rd router is reset to be unique like 192.168.2.1 and 3.1.
