Right Side Of Vista Start Menu
(28 posts)There's a site called Kelly Korner that has a reg file that can change the My Music and My pictures to what ever you want in XP
I've not tried it yet to see if it works on Vista:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
The one you are looking for is on the 2nd row in the right hand column.
Good luck!
I just looked at the kellys korner script. What it does is replace the folder globally not just the start menu so other programs will use the folder in place of pictures or music which you probably don't want.
Also it uses a Windows XP specific folder in the script so it shouldn't be used in Windows Vista.
Hi, Thank you for your help. I did use the script! It has replaced the the picture folder link in the vista start menu. But in the explorer folder tree it has produced two identical document folders where appear as sub folders of each other. If you delete one it deletes the other, and it is also quite slow in opening from the start menu.
I just checked the script again after reading the above and found the XP Specific folder was just a default so as long as you pick a different folder with the script then the default it works fine under Vista.
Though you can do the same without the script in Vista just right click click on the Pictures folder, select properties and select the location tab. There you can make it point to a different folder.
@metalmick: Can you post a screen shot showing the subfolders? It may help in figuring out the problem.
I couldn't see a way of directly uploading a screen shot so here's a link to it at photobucket. Thanks
Ok, I see the problem. It appears you have two known folders set to the same location so one folder appears twice.
The view is like this:
- Known Folder Downloads - Shortcut to D:\Downloads
- Known Folder Pictures or Music - Shortcut to D:\Downloads
Vista just displays it as:
- Downloads
- Downloads
@Lighthouse: Nice idea but it won't work here as these aren't actual shortcuts. Windows is just listing the same folder twice as it reads the same location twice from the registry.
@metalmick: If you run that script again and set the path back to the Pictures or Music folder depending on the script you downloaded then the folder list will return to normal.
Thank you very much everyone for your help, Using the link to post 14252 I downloaded the known folder browser, This showed that one folder was Called Downloads and pointed to D:\ Downloads and the folder was called Downloads and pointed to downloads but was actually My Pictures, so I directed it back to its proper place and everything returned to normal. I have now happy with a short cut in my quick launch toolbar to downloads. Once again Thank you all for your help.
Lighthouse I am very sorry I have given you the wrong post number. This is the webpage to download the known folder browser
It may be a little late to post this here, but...
The following is a tweak I developed (I think) from things I discovered while searching the web, then adding or changing some things I thought of.
To change the folder that a right side Start Menu link points to, revise the following registry values:
For the “Music” link, edit:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\My Music
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\My Music
Change the default value of “My Music” to the name of the desired folder – e.g.
“L:\Downloads”
For the “Pictures” link, edit:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\My Pictures
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\My Pictures
Changing the default value of “My Pictures” as in the item above.
Re-Boot.
The User, Documents, & Games links may be changed as well.
An added “bonus” to this is that the items inside these new folders act just like any other item in the start menu, i.e. single clicking on an item (shortcut, document, etc.) launches the program; or opens the document in its associated program. So… be careful! For example, a single click on an executable or script file WILL run that file.
Please let me know if this is of any use.
Thanx,
Randy
