Good question Mike; http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-3.....l-version/
Which is basically to say there is no Retail version, and there never will be. You can choose to upgrade if you have an eligible license, or purchase the System Builder/OEM disc, which now has a license wherein you may uninstall on one machine and install on a new one, as was permitted in Windows 7 Retail versions. Not all retailers are selling the OEM versions, which is incomprehensible to me personally. I went with OEM Win 8 Pro and am quite satisfied. Download the Release Preview version for free from microsoft to see if you like it first, it will work until January. But do a complete back-up first in case you want to bail out with zero money spent.
Btw - you can do a clean install with an upgrade .iso. Here is how.
