In order to play a video game some the website required that I download a plugin, I think it was Adobe Shockwave. So I downloaded the plugin, unfortunately it came with Norton Security Scanner, which I did not want. I removed it once and then removed all mention of it out of the register...But...when I rebooted it was still installed. I tired this a second time and after rebooting it was there again. Obviously I'm missing something. As long as I don't reboot it's gone and not running, (I usually leave the computer on and only reboot about once a week or so). How can I get rid of this program once and for all? I am running on Vista Ultimate.

Remove Norton Security Scanner
(17 posts)I use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall things. It free and it works great. There are one or two other programs that work as well but I don't remember the names offhand.
If its a stubborn program I use Resplendence Registry Manager to hunt down any leftovers in the registry. I've used the lite free version for years.
I backup the registry first, just in case. = )
Also, some programs leave leftovers in the Program Files folder, the Program Data folder, and in the AppData folder in the Users file, usually under LocalLow or Roaming.
Sometimes a search will find them all, more often I've had to delete them by hand.
Finally found out what to do. For those that run into this problem, the key is to go to Program Files then Common Files and delete the Symantec or Norton folder. After the reboot it's gone! Now to hunt and peck through the registry to get the last vestiges of this program.
@ randomaccess,
Good Advice !!!!
Resplendence is a program one must use very carefully and know what they are doing in the registry.
Probably the best software going for "digging out" the registry manually.
Suggest always giving a warning to (New Members) when recommending the program.

This Norton Security Scanner is pestilent. While posting my message it reappeared on my desktop. It's downloading itself everytime I delete it. I have now gone through my Zone Alarm and killed everything related to this program to prevent it from downloading again. If I could just find the file that's causing the downloads I could nip this in the bud. Any suggestions? This scanner is supposed to detect viruses right? Well this program is as bad as a virus, trojan, worm...whatever you want to call it! In the past two months I just got everything reinstalled from a major crash, I'm not going to do it again. HELP!
Resplendence is one cool tool. Between that and CCleaner I think I completely removed Norton Security Scanner. Did a reboot and so far it hasn't shown up to torment me any further. I know there are people who really love Norton products, but I'm not one of them. I've found their products to be highly proprietory and down right annoying. Thanks again randomaccess, you saved me from a lot of grief!
This is one of several reasons why Norton, Symantec, and McAfee will never be found on my machine. It took me a long time to get rid of them because I am not savvy enough to root around in the registry. There may be some fragments left that I can't identify, but they are dead, as far as I can tell. I agree with you about their being virus like. AOL and their instant messenger are just as bad. They were deeply embedded as bloatware in my Vista.
What (mpc104) says is TRUE.
After removal of (any) program, there still will be hundreds of references to it remaining in the Registry.
If one decides to experiment and load programs, one MUST have a way of doing Clean Installs and / or the Registry Tools necessary to remove all references to it in the registry in case one wants to remove a program completely.
It is kind of like my saying concerning links; "Think Before You Click".
Before one installs any program; "Think Before You Click on the Installer or Program".

That Norton Scanner was piggy backed with Shockwave, they didn't give me a choice to refuse the program and it didn't come with the uninstaller. That's what makes it so evil. Well I'm pleased to say Norton is history, Resplendence saved me a lot of time and effort to weed out that program. I've worked on the Registry before with Regedit.exe and it's search. It's more time consuming and one needs to be very careful with it. Resplendence is easier and the files are clearly marked. Made deleting a much less harrowing experience. And yes I did back up my registry before messing with it and I even backed up my new clean and improved registry for future reference.
Now that I have this solution I can help my friend to root out Norton!
THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR HELP AND SUGGESTIONS!
Little Toucan. You may find this very handy for registry work.

Delete the schedule named "NSSStub" from the scheduled tasks (C:\Windows\Tasks) after uninstalling Norton Security Scan from the Add/Remove programs in control panel.
Doing just this will never bring back Norton Security Scan back after reboot and will no longer be an evil.
Thanks
