Hi, my Vista PC has started running slow and so I want to replace my system files so they are fresh. i'm sorry if this is an easy question but I couldn't find the exact answer I wanted when searching.
Should just run my Vista CD and press install?
Will this install a dual boot of Vista, or will it overwrite my current Vista along with all my files? (I'm not too bothered if this happens)
Is there an easier way to just replace my system files?
Should I boot from DVD on start up or is running it with Vista okay?

Thanks for you time!

Hi Deney,

OK first do you have a retail copy of vista or an OEM copy? (Retail is one you buy separately from a shop. OEM comes with your PC)

if you have a retail copy its essential you back up your drivers first onto a memory stick / cd /dvd.... whatever. The last thing you wanna be doing is chasing drivers around the interweb for hours. An OEM disc should have all the drivers on it and install them along with Vista but i'd back up anyway just in case.

second. you have to boot from the Vista disc. When doing this it will give you the option to format your current HDD (delete the partition ). This will wipe EVERYTHING and do a complete clean install of vista erasing the old version. Make sure everything you want to keep (photos, music etc...) is backed up again onto a pen drive or something.

Double Driver is a great tool for backing up drivers. (make sure you back up to some removable media and not the HDD because its going to get formatted!)

Post back when your done to let us know how it went :)

Thanks

Jack

Thanks very much for the help! I think I will do it tomorrow, need to back up some stuff, argh, I think I'm gonna need to buy an external hard drive haha.
It's strange because my PC is VERY slow on startup, but then It runs about 90% of what it used to after I leave it for about 20 minutes. Oh well, a clean install will be good I think.

Thanks again.

my girlfriends computer has picked up pc defender spyware.i warned her about this and she still clicked on it.ive been told a clean install could sort this problem(screeching sounding warning pop up).i had to do a clean install for her once because of a forgotten password at the beggining of vista.i did this ok but didnt think till i done it that i never saved any internet settings, but hey presto it all worked ok.if i was to perform a clean install again do i need to save anything like that?she is on sky broadband(sagem router)or should it be same as 1st time i performed a clean install.does the router hold all the info it needs or is there a file with the info on it?
any help would be greatly apreciated thanx
