I have had a computer for less than a year so I am learning as I go.I have seen thing like RegCure advertised. Are they good to use or should I stay away from them? Right now my computer is working fine as far as I know.

Use CCleaner from the web (just Google it). It's for free and it works very well. I use it all the time. It has 2 functions:
1. Cleans the registry - which your computer probably needs (after a year)
2. Cleans all the other stuff (Cookies, Temporary files etc.)
Very useful tool. Don't spend any money on other programs. You won't need to.

Also, it is debatable whether registry cleaners actually do anything to improve your system. They can clean up keys, but the performance difference is not noticeable. Especially with the risk of inadvertently deleting and important key, I would say it's not worth it.

taybay, at least with CCleaner I never had a problem. But your point is well taken. There seems to be debate about the performance potential and it figures if you imagine modern "table lookup" technologies. But then again, dirt on the kitchen floor does not prevent you from walking in the kitchen either.

Will registry cleaners be able to fix what the brontok virus (and similar viruses) left behind? Coz, from what I read in other forums, you can't fix your computer from the virus (ie. you got rid of the virus, but your task manager still isn't accessible, etc) until you edit your registry.

As far as I can tell, CCleaner throws "dead" registry entries out. Can it repair corrupted ones? I don't know - doubt it. But if there is an entry from a former Virus that has no association, it will throw it out.

@ Lighthouse, I think we are in agreement. As I said: "Can it repair corrupted ones? I don't know - doubt it".

Whs, thats interesting. I've been using RegCure for 4 months (not really understanding it, but someone recommend it ). I run it and it finds and "repairs" 150 items. Five min later, for interest, I run it again and it finds 160 items for repair. I guess I am somewhat supecious as to its effectiveness. donjudy203

That is strange, indeed. Don't know what to tell you. As far as I know, the "repair" is usually only a deletion of dead entries. But 150 or 160, that is many. Have never used RegCure, so I cannot tell what it does.
