ccleaner is the safest and freely available application. But remember when you perform a registry cleaner remember to take back up of the registry, there are issues with registry cleaners which either make certain applications and even the operating system not usable. Use them unless other wise you are left with no other choice.

I agree with Santo -- registry cleaners can be dangerous. Also, regarding the OP's desire to clean the registry so that the "computer can run its fastest", I have seen no definitive research that indicates that regular registry cleaning is needed to keep Vista from running slower.

The people who sell registry cleaner software would like you to believe that it is required for regular maintenance, but I consider it a fix-it tool. If there is a problem that could be caused by bad registry entries, then the use of a registry cleaner is warranted. Note that CCleaner also removes other junk that is far more likely to be the cause of a slowdown than registry entries.

correction to ScottW:

the registry is somewhat the "nerve" of an operating system under windows. sometimes, entries are undeleted, unspecified, mislocated or left by uninstlled programs. thus, it causes slowdown to computers.
ccleaner removes some specific registry entries, just like a cleaner that cleans a surface; but registry mechanic cleans registry from the surface through the innermost.

I was looking for something to help me with the registry and other stuff as well and I ended up using Auslogics BoostSpeed (http://auslogics.com/en/software/boost-speed). Yeah ok, it's not free,but it's cheaper than other similar optimization suites and it works really well.

For anyone wanting free ones
CCleaner and RegSeeker
(I tend now to use RegSeeker (for the registry cleaning) and CCleaner for general cleaning

@tan2x, I said there was no definitive research that a messy registry causes Vista to run slower. How does your "correction" refute that statement?

Back in the days of Windows 9x, it did seem that removing registry gunk would make the OS more reliable and maybe boot faster. But, for XP and Vista I would like to see some empirical evidence that proves, or disproves, that unused registry entries cause the OS to run slower. I've researched this and have not found any such evidence.

@scottw i think it was more of a add on to what you said and not a correction.

I just downloaded Uniblue's Registry Cleaner . It was featured on "How to Geek" on my Google home page. I already ran it once but it keeps telling me I have more stuff to repair. Can I trust this program? I am failry ignorant about this topic.

@Carole

I just went on their website, I wouldn't trust it as it is only a trial, (which normally they scan but don't fix until you enter your credit card). I would recommend using glaryutilities or CCleaner as previously mentioned.

@ALL,

Doing an ABSOLUTE CLEAN INSTALL of any Windows O/S will yield between 200 ~ 300 errors in the registry.

Ccleaner is NOT a good Registry Cleaner NOR was it meant to be. IT is EXCELLENT at removing Temporary files, Active X Control by products, Cookies and a few Gross Registry Errors left over from program installs and uninstalls.

I use (4) heavy duty registry cleaners and each one will catch different errors the others miss. There is NO one best Registry cleaner that I am aware of.

As a side note, the Registry should be compacted on a routine schedule.

Folks, computers are machines and like any other equipment, they require routine scheduled maintenance on the software plus the hardware for optimum performance.

Rick P.

@jack7h3r1pp3r,

I didn't list them on purpose because they have to be used with care and I don't want to be responsible for (ANYONE) messing up their own personal computer because they used the programs I use and didn't realize that some registry entries caught by the programs are (NOT) errors in fact, but they deleted the registry entries. (What a long dis-jointed sentence) In other words, (CYA) and do no harm.

Rick P.
