You were not supposed to put anything on the D:\ to start with. I assume it happened because you did not assign a proper drive for Backup and Restore. On HP laptop D:\ drives you usually see only 2 folders called "Owner PC" and "Recovery" and 1 file called "Media ID". Those you must keep. All the rest you can delete. Then go into the Recovery/Restore wizard and allocate another drive - else it will soon fill up again. The reason that happens is because Vista assumes D:\ to be empty (which is the case with Vista delivered by MS). But the PC manufacturers were too cheap to deliver a recovery disk with your PC and put that onto the D:\ drive. Which gets me to the next topic. If you have not done that yet, you should asap burn a recovery disk from the recovery partition (D:\ drive). Type REC into the start/search field. Above you should see "Recovery Disk Creation". Click on that and you will get to the wizard that will guide you. Have 2 DVD-R handy (no CD's - you would need 12). On those you can then burn your recovery disk. But note: You can do that only ONCE!! So get it right the first time.
PS: If you are not sure with this deletion business on D:\, make a snip of the list of files/folders on your D:\ and post it here so I can have a look at it.

WHS. Thank you for your advice. I stopped the auto backup untill I can allocate to the DVD drive for backup. I'm sorry for being so dumb, but how would I do a "snip" to post. I have 12 or so files on (D):. l'll try and copy (ctl-c) and then come back here and do a (ctl-v). I did make a rocovery disk when I first got my HP. Again, thank you for your help. Don

When I said snip, you can either do a screenshot with the "prt sc" on the top right of your keyboard - you have to press this together with the Fn key (bottom left). The other method is to use the snipping tool which you find in All Programs > Accessories. In both cases you have to save the shot (usually in Pictures) and then you can post it here with this method:
1. Create your account at http://photobucket.com/ - real easy
2. Use the folder with your name on it or create a subfolder (recommended). You do that on the left side where it says "New Album" > Save
3.Go to "Upload Images and Videos", somewhere in the middle. Underneath where it says "Reduce to", pick 640x480 (best size for posting). Now click on "Choose Files". This will most likely bring up your "Pictures" folder (but you can select another folder). Double click on the file you want to upload. After a few seconds you will see it.
4. If you want to post this picture directly on the Forum, click on IMG Code (last link). If you only want to post the link to the picture, click on Direct link. Note: the thing will get yellow - then you got it in your clipboard (from where you Paste).
5. Now you can paste this into your HTG posting. If you chose IMG, the picture will only show up AFTER you posted. In the posting you will only see the link. If you chose "Direct link", it will just be a link

Don, I will be out for a while. You will hear back from me either later tonight (I am in the Central European Time Zone) or tomorrow. So you can take your time.

Since filenames are just text, it's easier to copy and paste the text. In a Command Prompt window, type:
dir d:\ /a
for a listing of the top level directory. Right-click and select Mark, then highlight the text with the mouse and press Enter. The text is now in the clipboard and can be pasted as text here on the forum with Ctrl-V.

Don, you did good. However, the files that we see on your D: drive don't match the list that whs gave, nor the one I find on HP's website. I found this article at HP that talks about what to do if you get a "Low Disk Space" message for the recovery partition. Is this what you are seeing? It also shows that the D: drive should be protected by a warning message. Have you seen that?

ScottW. yes, i did see the warning msg. I went into explorer and file management and unclicked the "do not show hidden files". Then when I clicked on files in windows explorer recovery(D), this list came up. I am going to the article. Thanks ScottW. don

Don, don't delete anything. This I have to study some more. I think your list shows all the hidden files too. Or is it exactly what you see when you double click on D:\? (which would be different from what I am used to see).

Don, I'm nervous about telling you to delete anything either. I would like to see a master list of the files that should be in the recovery partition so nothing important gets erased. When the drive reports full, is that completely full as in 99% or 100%? I think that you should make a set of recovery discs from the recovery partition. Do you have recovery discs?

Also, please give us the model name and number of your HP. I would like to look it up on HP's website and see if there is specific information about the recovery partition.

ScottW, Don did make a recovery disk when he first got the PC (see his second post). That is why he actually cannot loose too much. But still, the recovery partition should stay intact. Question: with your posting method (dir d:\ /a), does that show the hidden files too? Because it looks like those are files/folders from inside the HP Recovery folder.

The /a switch on the dir command specifies to show "all" files including hidden and system files.

@donjudy2003, as ScottW just confirmed, we are looking at a mix of "normal" and hidden folders. That complicates the matter. If you could please just list what you see when you double click D:\ (without showing hidden files). That would be easier to deal with (at least for me) without studying the inners of the HP recovery folder (which I would have to do on the wife's HP laptop).
