I am running vista SP1 on a Toshiba P200-1FZ
200 Gb hard drive
2Gb ram
IntelCore2duo t5450 @ 1.66GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 (256MB Dedicated Graphics Memory)
Avira Antivir Premium(Full scan once a week at least, with Spybot also)
Zonealarm Free firewall
Defragmented every week.
Etc.Etc.

When i play any audio, and then any sort of load is put onto my internet connection(even something like refreshing myspace) the sound crackles and jumps as if i'm running more than my cpu can handle. Which is really annoying because it sits comfortably at 0-5% on both cores.

It's been happening for a while, which is annoying when trying to watch video's online and etc, because i have to wait for the entire thing to load, or put up with the sound problem.
I've got all the latest drivers, and there's nothing i can think of to solve it, any idea's as to what's causing the problem?

Thanks in advance (Y)

That's always sat between 700-1300mb
Never exeeds 1700, no matter what i do. lol.
Right now it's at 1154 and if i open a new webpage with images on it then my audio will do it, despite memory being around 50%

Stejam02,

A Guess:

Running (2) Firewalls Plus Avira Antivir is a Resource Hog in Real Time Plus Don't Know How SpyBot is Setup Plus Pulling Max Bandwidth on Sites Such as MySpace Plus Don't Know How You Are Connecting to Broad Band.

(Double Filter) DSL Line Plus Discard (1) Firewall Plus Run AV in Manual Mode Plus Check Setup of All Programs Set To Start On Boot Up.

Integrated On-Board Sound DSP Chip Can Only Take So Much.

Post Back With Results.

Rick P.

Erm, i'm not sure where you got the two firewalls idea from but i've only got Zonealarm firewall.
And spybot doesn't run until i run it.
I changed the start-up programs when i first got vista and got rid of the majority of my "crapware"

By "Run AV in manual mode" do you mean have no scheduled tasks?
Because i don't, i just run them myself so that it's more convenient.
If not then i have no idea what you mean, lol.

Stejam, Avira Premium is a full security suite including a firewall. Do you have this firewall disabled?

There is nothing in the specs for your laptop that would suggest it doesn't have the power to playback audio with a RealTek HD Audio chip. Have you checked for the latest HD Audio driver and software at Toshiba?

Stejam02,

Appears you are running AV in manual mode however there still may be some Services running in AutoStart.

Also, I was assuming you had Vista Firewall Turned ON Plus Zone Alarm Firewall Turned ON.

We have many that load up their machines with every program one can think of during startup so many times I mis-assume that new members are not familiar with their machines or software.

In Your Case, You Are a "Pro" and Know What's Going On.

Have run into the Sound Problem long ago but it was a bad Mother Board (Capacitors).

Just keep watching (This Thread) as others may have ideas on what is causing your problem.

Rick P.

ScottW: Yeah, i'm checking for software and driver updates regularly to see if it solves the problem, but there is nothing as of yet, except for the first time that i had checked.
And my avira premium doesn't actually have a firewall, it has "Avira Webguard" which scans webpages i visit(often picks up on malicius HTML code, but that's about it), but it doesn't atually block access to my computer from the web, or have the power to stop programs on my computer from connecting to the internet.
But it is a very good real-time scanner so anything that does slip through it picks up straight away.

Rapheonix: I'm constantly checking up on my processes and services, and there's nothing in services left that i actually know what it does or is, so i'm just avoiding playing with those.
i only have windows defender running a scan once a week, along with the new windows anti-malware, and the AV and anti-spyware mentioned earlier (God i sound paranoid...)
And yeah, i get the "newer member, talk in "baby talk" so they understand" it's just you phrased it pretty confusing, took me a while to decipher, lol.

Stejam02,

NO Problem.

I tend to confuse myself at times (LOL) (LOL).

Would suggest you give Toshiba a ring.

From your post, I'm a bit worried that it (might) be a Hardware Problem.

Kindest Regards,
Rick P.

Yeah, i had an internet connection problem(still not resolved, http://www.howtogeek.com/forum.....post-30925)
And i still have absolutely no idea what causes that, and my CPU usage goes through the roof when i'm downloading too.

What sort of hardware problem do you think COULD cause these things?
Because i take a lot of care of it, and i'm VERY careful to keep the fans uncovered on my laptop(is it just me or is the underneath the worst place to put the fans anyway?
Surely on the back, or the side, but why suck in at the bottom and blow out through the side(Close to where the air is sucked in so ANYTHING near the side of the laptop reflects hot air back into fans, and doesn't that mean it's not really suitable for a desk either?))
I think laptop(oh, notebook now isn't it?) designers should really TEST the things before releasing ;) (Y)

Anyway, i've gone abit off topic.
Any idea's as to what part of the hardware? Because i've noticed that in the past month my RAM usage has fallen from a constant 1300+ to about 700+
But my CPU's are slight more worked.
And since i installed SP1 my boot-up has gotten a LOT faster(whereas other reviews have said it gets SLOWER)

Ahh i do love computers but they really do know how to rub people up the wrong way. Even if they know what they're doing with computers!!!

Stejam02,

Nice Laptop !

http://uk.computers.toshiba-eu....._ID=137291

In my opinion, Laptops are convenient but cheaply made for the price that they are sold for.

With your talents, I think you would really enjoy building your own big machines with quality components :) :)

Yeah, it's pretty much a high-range all-rounder.
And yeah, i just needed something for in my room(i'm just 17, still live at home etc.)
So the cash flow is the problem with building my own.
And i'd probably rather build my own laptop, especially since it's supposed to be a lot harder. I love a good challenge =]

Stejam, this Avira may be your problem after all. Imagine anything that goes thru your system will be scanned by Avira - any webpage, anything you download, etc. And those scans put a lot of load on the system. I notice that even on my Q6600 quad core. When my security system scans, everything else slows down. On the 1.8GHz laptop even a lot worse.
I suggest you disable Avira for a while and see whether that does not improve the situation.

Yeah, i've thought about that before when we were on my download speed problem.
But when i turn of the web guard, the speed boost is minimal on downloads.
But i'll try it tommorow and try loading some heavy load image pages with my music playing.

The download speed is governed by other factors. Speed of your internet service, load on the server, current load on the internet, etc., etc. I would not draw too many conclusions from a variance in the download speed.

Stejam, sorry about that Avira firewall; bad assumption on my part. I quickly looked at their website and saw there was a security suite which is also called Premium.

The next thing that I'm thinking is that we should check all of the settings related to audio and run some tests to try and see what's going on. Try the DirectX diagnostic, dxdiag, for starters. Another thing -- you said your system is using less memory but the CPU is working harder. This suggests to me that maybe the pagefile is too small or off. Still, I wouldn't think that would cause the audio to stutter, but I'm trying to be exhaustive.
