Ready Boost
(16 posts)In Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Autoplay you can make the settings for the little window. Easiest is to "Reset all Defaults". You can also click on the blue link on the bottom of the little window. The reinstallation should not have mattered (but one never knows for sure). I am pretty sure your ready boost did not install. That's why I asked you earlier to look into Properties of the flash drive. There you can find out.
Properties looks the same as usual.General-Tools-Hardware-Security-Customize.But no ready boost tab.
The round pie chart and then all the bytes n stuff. So wow I guess I have to go through the 5 yr ordeal of re- installing vista again-ugh.Thanks for your help have a good one.
Bucshot, hello and welcome. I know which tab you are referring to -- the one that should show up in the Properties sheet for the drive. Apparently Vista doesn't think your flash drive is ReadyBoost capable.
Is your flash drive ReadyBoost certified? This is not necessary, but it would be reassuring. Have you installed Service Pack 1 (SP1)? There are improvements to ReadyBoost as well as patches that may help. To see if ReadyBoost is available, go to Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Performance Information and Tools -> Advanced Tools and look for "Configure my Windows ReadyBoost device". Is it there? What happens if you select it?
Bucshot, keep in mind that Vista certified is NOT the same as ReadyBoost certified. Also, though it was written over a year ago, this excellent article has good info on ReadyBoost requirements for flash drives and how to check in Event Viewer to see the results of Vista's testing of the flash drive:

Bucshot,
This worked for me. http://www.watchingthenet.com/.....boost.html
enable any usb to work with readyboost
@FMZ, the problem with that is, that if you use a stick that is too slow, you are defeating the purpose of Ready Boost and may actually end up slowing the system down. I would rather look for a stick with a fast read/write speed. They are so cheap these days anyhow.
@Bucshot, you never said how much RAM you have. If you have only 1GB of RAM, you may want to consider getting 2GBs. You need to get 2x1GB dimms that cost appr. $44 for modern laptop RAM. If you need more info, post back with make and model.
