Hi! Recently I've started to experience random, massive drops in FPS, going so low as to 5-10 from an original FPS of 60-100. This persists for a few minutes, then goes back to the normal FPS, and then drops again. I've updated my Nvidia drivers, though it's done nothing to abate the issue. I'm not particularly technically inclined, so I hoped I could find a solution to the problem here.
Below I've added images of HWMonitor statistics during both low and high FPS.

Could be that the system is writing out logs at that time. Check in the Event Viewer whether there was anything going on during that specific time.

No unusual log activity during the times when the framerate tanks.

One of the logs has an odd time stamp, though - it says it was created 13:29 yesterday, but is at the top of the list when organized by date created, though I'm guessing that's likely not related to the issue at hand - if an issue at all.

Give WHAT'S RUNNING a try. When start it and then bring it forward once you see the problem. Might help.

I also use a Gadget, TOP FIVE that will show me who's using the CPU and MEMORY for times like this IF I should have it happen.

Can well recommend Top 5 (thanks to Irv for first posting it here)
Just leave it set on Processor, and you will soon know the culprit.

There doesn't seem to be any increase in used physical memory, or CPU usage during times of performance loss.

CPU usage is around 13%-20%, and doesn't stray from that average at any time. Likewise, physical memory usage is around 30%-40%, and doesn't seem to have any relation with the loss in FPS.

Only possible other culprit is probably DISK ACCESS...

A couple of programs exist :

Other too...

Possibly could be seeing a priority boost though locking out you video program, harder to see.

Sorry for the late response. Just finished reinstalling my Windows entirely - problem still persists. Just downloaded Process Explorer. What kind of information should I be looking out for?

On the top are a bunch of boxes. The next to last one on the right is the DISK activity. Put you mouse over it and you'll see who is active.

I'm wondering if you have read errors on the hard drive? Did you run CHKDSK before installing and format new complete?

I didn't run CHKDSK, I'll do that right now on both drives and come back with the results once it's complete.

Ran a CHKDSK - problem still persists. Seems like GPU usage spikes up to a 100% and then drops intermittently when running memory-intensive programs, though I've never had these kinds of performance issues. Usually FPS lies around 60 on the same games that now drop down to 5 randomly. There also seems to be no relation to the program running, and the performance hit it takes. For instance, when I launch it - it runs fine for a moment, and then drops down to 5 FPS. If I restart the program and wait a while, it can still run at 5 FPS and improve in performance a few moments later. Despite this, GPU usage is normal when the program isn't running.

Which game/games are taking the hit on performance? I know that in Planetside 2 this is happening regardless of OS.....

Any game in general, or just other memory-intensive programs.
