Hello. I'm currently using an older Compaq computer. Currently in the box there is 2 DDR PC3200 512 sticks of ram running at 200 MHz. The max it can hold is 2G of ram. I want to get 1 Gig more to max it out. The questions I have is this. I've searched around for ram and I seem to only be finding PC3200 ram running at 400 HMz. Will this make a difference for me. If I buy this ram will it automatically run at 200 HMz instead or do I actually have to find ram that runs at 200 MHz.

Second question, since I have 2 more slots open. Is it better to buy a one gig stick of ram, or is it better to get 2 512 sticks?

Thakns.

1. the MHZ rate is a question of what your mobo supports. Check at your manufacturers website for specs.
2. it is better to get 2x512.

I'll have to look when I get home. I think when I looked last night it said 200 MHz. So are you saying if I get the pc3200 that runs at 400 MHz, it won't work?

I was just trying to match what I currenlty have in the box and was wondering if I got the 400 MHz one would it conflict with the 200 Mhz that is in there now?

whs. If he only has a single core processor, then no need for 2 sticks.

That's why I asked him in a previous post.

Sorry it took so long to get back. It's been a long weekend. I have an AMD Athlon 64 3500.

Now going back to my question. Currently there are two 512 DDR PC3200 running at 200MHz.

All I see online is PC3200 running at 400MHz. If I but this ram, will the computer automatically let it run at 200 MHz as the original ram, or do I have to search for ram that is 200 MHz.

Thanks.

Scan your system here. Then you'll know the best match.

The computer will run it at the lower speed. Have a hunt around and see if you can find a 2GB stick. Might be cheaper than 2x1GB.
Your processor is single core.

Yes for now. I ordered a gig of ram. I'll now see if it makes any difference once it gets here.
