Short of looking at every single bookmark, is there a way to check which ones link to a page that no longer exist so that they can be deleted?

Yes, check out AM Deadlink

I've used it for years and it worked great with XP and Vista, IE and Firefox. There is a huge issue with FF3 however, but there are workarounds. Check the forum here
