Is it easy enough for a geek to buy some RAM for their laptop and install it themselves?

Yes, replacing memory is very easy. just open a little door on the bottom and snap out and snap in.

On some laptops the RAM is installed in 2 different places. What is the make and exact model of laptop you have ?

Check first with the Crucial scanner which RAM sticks are compatible with your PC: http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

The only problem with laptops is that you have to get the angle right at which you insert the Dimms (sticks). Try to remember the approximate angle when you pull out the old Dimms.
