As I've posted elsewhere- I recently purchased a new desktop computer.

I like it very much and it runs faster than any I've ever had before, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I've done what I can to remove unnecessary programs, processes, etc. but I'm curious about the physical upkeep as well.

The salesman/geeksquader that sold me the computer recommended that I physically clean and dust the machine every 6 months.

Basically, he said, you should remove the cover and blow all the dust out (or pay Best Buy to do the same thing).

I'm curious what all of your opinions are on this, and what else should be done while doing the cleaning and the cover is off.

Any thoughts?

The periodical dusting is not a bad idea. But the frequency will depend on where your box is located. If it is on the floor, every 6 months may be a good idea. If it is on the desk, once a year may be enough. Blowing alone will probably not do. Get a small soft brush so that you can clean the blower wheels carefully. And I would not recommend those pressurized air cans that you buy at e.g. Home Depot. They spray wet matter. It is better to reverse the vacuum and do it with that - outside if possible.

(LOL) Yeah, dust can really get into a machine even with filters sometimes.

All of mine run 5 or 6 HS Fans so I end Cleaning the inside of the cases and just Replacing the fans about every 6 months or so.

Also if you can get in there try to clean the CPU heatsink with cotton buds or something similar, but just be careful .... theres something very delicate under there lol

!!!!(can someone confirm this is safe from a static electricity point of view i've done it for years and never had any problems.)
