Problems with eSATA card with MyBook external hard drive

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Gateway FX530XG with built in SATA support (driving two WD 250Gbyte hard drives NOT set up as a RAID drive setup). I have added a PNY SATA RAID 2 ch. card, model P-DSA150-PCI-RF, to drive an external MyBook 750Gbyte hard drive. The hard drive locks up after a minute or less; when this happens, I have to do a hard boot. Anyone have an idea what is wrong? I hate to use the external drive in USB or FireWire mode when the drive has SATA capability. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
