Hi,

I've recently built myself a new PC, connected up all the parts in accordance with the manual(s) provided, and when I come to turn it on, my monitor pops up with a "No Signal" message.

The computer powers on, the LED on the motherboard is lit up, both CPU and chassis fans are working, and the DVD drive flashes. I just get no input onto my monitor. I have thought that I might have a PSU unit that's providing insufficient power, but I have the same problem if I unplug both my hard drive and DVD, so I'm sceptical about that. It's a 460W supply, and my motherboard recommends 400W minimum. What's the likelihood of the PSU being able to run part of the components, but not enough to get the graphics up and running?

If it's any help, my motherboard is an Asus P5QL-VM. Can supply any other specs if it helps.

Thanks!

RemoveTomorrow Hi. That is typical of a problem with either the graphics card or the monitor cable. Take the card out, and then put it back in. Make sure the extra power cable (if it has one) is plugged into the card. Try a different monitor cable.

I've tried it with three different monitors, all with different cables but to no avail. The graphics are inbuilt on the board, and I'm hoping to install a proper one once I manage to actually get something on screen. But I'm not really sure what the problem is at the moment- unless it's a faulty VGA output.

Try and borrow a graphics card, nothing special.

reseat your memory as one attempt....also use one memory stick at a time, you may have a bad one. This happened to me recently with the same symptoms and someone from here told me to try a mem stick in slot "A" and then the other memory sticks. If the computer does not start with that mem stick, then it's the bad guy. In my case, I had a bad memory slot also. I am now running with 3 memeory modules instead of 4.........and the monitor now works. If you find a bad mem stick, try the good ones in all the other slots. I tried the bad one in the other slots too. That's how I knew that I had a bad slot and a bad memory stick.

Right, so semiretired's idea got me somewhere. I tried one piece of RAM at a time, one started up with no noise, the other gave me a high-pitched beep (like the usual startup one), and then another after ~15 seconds. Checking with the AMI BIOS Codes for my motherboard, I'm guessing that I'm suffering from a DRAM refresh failure. Which looks like a new motherboard. Is there another fix to get around this, or am I going to have to fish about for my guarantee?

Heh, found out the second beep is because the keyboard wasn't plugged in properly-0 d'oh.

So basically the problem now is 1 short beep on start up with one RAM inserted, but the other piece produces nothing.

And now to top it all off, it appears to be working. Turns out my onboard VGA output doesn't work straight off, so I connected by GFX card up, and tried that. Turns out it's up and running with one RAM channel. According to a mate with a similar motherboard, he had problems getting a second channel running from start, so I'll fiddle about with the settings on that, and hopefully get it working properly. Hopefully I won't have any more issues.

Thanks for the help everyone!
