Hi - I installed the 'Enable Pin To Start Menu' registry hack application (big mistake) - It did everything it was supposed to do, and more, after it was running I noticed that I could no longer add sites to my Favorites file as the path had been changed - A check mark keeps appearing against Work Offline even while I'm working online and the Views for all of my files are constantly changing - I disabled the application - Did system restore as far back as I was able, but none of this has made any difference - Can anyone tell me how to restore the registry to it's prior working condition or is this likely to cause more problems??!! Thanks.

Just do a simple system restore :)
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore
Or, just search 'sys' in start menu, and it will come up

Then that will just take your system back to how it was before you installed the hack (providing you click on the correct restore point)

You can be sure this will work, because when the operation is actually executing (ie: after it has logged you off and is running through what it has to do, it will say 'restoring the registry' as one of the sections

This is, with regards to Vista, which i presume you have becuase you posted in the Vista section?
Even so, with XP it is pretty much the same, it just does not tell you what it is doing so much!

Thanks for your answer Aleeve, but I mentioned that I already did system restore as far back as I was able, don't think it was back far enough tho' as it made no difference and I am unable to access anything prior to that - Yes, I'm running Vista Home Premium.

TraceD,

The only answer I can think of is a "Clean Install" since you said in your original post that you had already tried a system restore several times.

All I can say is that something went terribly wrong when you attempted the How-To.

Maybe The-Geek will jump-in with an easier answer.

Kindest Regards,

There's no application to uninstall? I'm quite puzzled to what the problem could be.

It's one simple registry key, or did you use some other application to accomplish this?

I used the app. at the bottom of the page regarding 'Enable Pin To Start Menu' and there is no uninstall for this app., just a disable, which of course was the first thing I did.

You can try Revo to see if there are removable traces of the app. Freeware.

TraceD, is the "application" that you used from this article?
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....-vista-xp/

There is a zip file there with two .reg files, one to enable the registry change and the other to disable it. These are not really applications.

Yes, this is the one, and I have Revo, as suggested by Scott, and as you say it's not really an application so it's not listed in Revo - So, do I need to search for the zip file and delete that as well?

No, you don't need to find the zip file. I think some of the other posters were confused when you said you made the registry change with an application. The 2 .reg files from that article by The Geek are simple text files that modify only one key. The Enable .reg file should not have caused so much trouble as what you are seeing. I believe you say above that you ran the Disable .reg file, so that would undo the registry change. It's still highly unlikely that this simple registry change would have caused all the problems you are having.

So it's more likely that it was a prior install, but I just never noticed that it was causing problems until recently then - I'll have to try and figure what it might have been and do a process of elimination - Thanks for the advice ScottW and everyone else that tried to help.
