I hate dubbed films! Lately they are rerunning the Four Fists series here (Bud Spencer And Terence Hill) and they are really really bad! A pity - I still love to see T. Hill:)

Luckily in Holland they play films mostly in their original language with subtitles. Dubbing is very rare. And some gets lost in the translation, but watching films on Belgium channels is hilarious - they have such funny alternatives in translation from 'real' Dutch. (No offence meant to anyone from Belgium!)

I think when kids leave school, they get 2 choices.
Write subtitles for films (in a language you don't fully understand). or.

Back to the subject at hand - I found that when I open pdf with PDF Xchange they do nót give the thumbnail, that only worked for the files that just had been opened with Acrobat reader.

And my regapp is done looking for all the entries, so I exported them and now I'll uninstall Acrobat and see if I can get the previes working with just pdfshell.dll and a couple of registry entries:)

Sarah, you really threw me off the trail by talking about a "Preview Handler". I had carefully checked all of your messages to make sure it wasn't a thumbnail viewer that you were after. Also, the PDFPrevHndlr.dll from Adobe is a preview handler, not a thumbnail viewer. That's why it didn't work for you, even though it probably was doing what it was supposed to!

Hi ScottW - you're absolutely right. My fault entirely and indeed the Foxit app did great, just wasn't what I was looking for.
But I'm getting close now - I'll be back soon:)

So far no luck, I must have forgotten something in the regfile that needs to be there.
But I need to reinstall Acrobat to find out what and I'm done for today.
I'll give it another try later on.

Goodnight everyone,
Sarah.

My result so far: I'll keep Acrobat Reader installed and default app for pdf files, because that's the only way I get it to work.

If someone else comes up with a solution, let me know! I'm very interested:)

(Oh and one more on my todo list - a thumbnail on rtf files seems like a great idea too ...
Thinking of you, ScottW ;-D)

Sarah, nice of you to think of me. I hear you saying "one more" just as I predicted. :-)

I don't get thumbnail previews for RTF, DOCX, XLS, or any other document formats. PDF files are the only ones I have that give thumbnail previews. The preview pane can handle all of these formats, so it ought to be possible to generate thumbnails.

I took a quick look and didn't find any way to do this, but it's not something I'm interested in pursuing. Thumbnail previews for pictures makes sense, but for documents I don't feel the need. If I've forgotten what's inside one, I just launch it.

Hi ScottW - no, ... thumbnails on rtf (a format I rarely use anyway) is not a necessity at all, but I just had to come up with a 'one more' for you:)
I'm sure I'll come up with a 'one more' in the future, but at the moment I'm pretty satisfied.
(Already made a new drive backup this morning to be sure I get to keep this no matter what ... LOL)

I did come across some shareware programs that give thumbnails of just about anything, so maybe one day I'll take the trouble of sniffing around to find a freeware one. Not everything needs to be a native Vista thing, right?
Still, the new explorer rather pleases me (which I hadn't expected - I never used the standard windows explorer in my old Win98). I still use Irfanview (a lót!) for handling my photo's and images, but the thumbnailview in explorer is so good I rarely use the thumbnails of irfan any more.

So, because I mainly use explorer and I use a lot of pdf, I would like to keep the thumbnails on my pdf files and still be able to open them with PDF Xchange (the preview is there for a short time after having had acrobat reader the default app to open the pfd, but after disk cleanup the thumbnails are replaced with the generic icon), preferably without the need to have acrobat reader installed.
There you have it:)

Greetz...,
Sarah.
