I've taken apart and put together computers many times, even managing to combine a few into usable systems, but I haven't built one myself yet.

First, what kind of price would I be looking at? Im planning a fairly low level system for XP or Ubuntu. 1-2 GB ram, 2-2.5 GHz. Mainly going to be used for School work and the like.

Second, Is XP still available? I don't like Vista, I've used it, It doesn't work with any of our devices, its annoying. I've read that XP is being discontinued, Is there anywhere I can still get a legal copy of XP?

Finally, What brand names should I look for? I've used obscure companies' products with fairly low success rates, so what are the trusted names I should look for first?

satansoldier,
(Personally)
1. I recommend Asus Intel Based MBs.

2. XP is still available Retail & OEM. (Last Search)

3. Best prices and component selection will probably be http://newegg.com

From this, you can start putting the components of the system together based on your budget.

Kindest Regards,
Rick P.♦:)
