a couple of months ago an elderly lady gave me her old computer, a compac presario 5204. it appears to have never been used. it looks like it came right out of the box. it came with windows98, 64mb ram, amd k6-2 processor, cd-rom, jbl pro speakers (mounted to the monitor)etc. i googled it and this thing sold for around $1500 in 1999. but who cares, right? i gutted it and i'm rebuilding to make it useful.
my problem: how do i figure out the power button wiring to fit an asus motherboard? i've searched everything i could think of but haven't found anything. is there a safe trial and error way to configure the original power button wires to the motherboard?

Switch should be a Normally Open, Momentarty Contact, Push Button Switch with (2) wires coming from it.
---
Look up the Asus Manual for the Motherboard and Download it.
---
Should be be diagram in it for [ Panel ] wire hook ups.
---
The (2) wires go on pins marked PWRSW in Panel Diagram and imprinted on board next to Panel Header.
---
There is NO polarity.

thats a start for me. the switch is a circuit board with three lights on it also. it says "typhoon switch" on the board but nothing showed up in any searches. on a continuity check how would the three other lights read? i could do without the lights and possibly the reset, if there is one. i'm kind of sure i have it figured out i just want to be sure i won't damage the motherboard, which is self explanatory.

LMAO, LH. those power buttons always give me trouble. after that post everything was fine until i came across this switch attached to a circuit board with three lights, power, and reset and only 5 wires running off it. at work i try to keep everything as close as possible to original on a restoration property, i find myself doing it on the computers i restore, too. OCD i think it's called :P
i just sold that dell, too. on the outside it looked like an old dell. i even ordered dell peripherals and 20" monitor. on the inside it was a monster for a daily use pc. nvidia gforce graphics card, e8400 cpu, 4gb ram, asus tv tuner, sony dvd burner, 160gb 10,000rpm hdd, 1tb hdd, vista home premium, 500wt antec psu, etc. and under the front cover i installed a multicolor led fan to cool the hdd's and to backlight the face. to top it off i created a wallpaper with a flaming background with the words HellsDell in gothic. it was kind of hard to sell because most people thought it was just an overpriced refurbished Dell. the guy who finally bought it use to work for Compuserve. kind of made my day having a geek buy my stuff...
