Hi semiretired,
It could be attributed to an update for Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). Can you check on your system or would you happen to know if there is a windows update that happened for IE8 on your computer. Its more of IE-8 issue. You can find out if your computer has IE8 installed on it by opening internet explorer --> On the top right of the screen you will find Tools listed with a symbol of a mechanical gear. To the right of it you will find a button for help which will have a blue circle with a question mark in it. Click on help and when the menu comes up click on About Internet Explorer. This will tell you if you have IE-8 on the computer. If this is the case let me know. I will tell you how you can get rid of the update for IE8 from the computer. If it is not IE 8 then it would be that there are some add-on (toolbars etc.) that interfere or corrupt the IE settings which can be resolved by resetting IE.
Another possibility is a virus attack on the computer which cannot be ruled out. Download malware bytes from www.malwarebytes.org and install this tool. (Please treat this tool as only a scanning software and not a complete anti-virus solution - this tool does not monitor your computer for virus activities but only will scan it and remove it manually). Perform a quick scan which should be the default scan option when it loads. If anything suspicious it will show up in the line for objects infected with bright red. Once scan is complete click show results and click on remove selected. This will open a text log file which needs to be closed. The tool will tell you if it needs a restart (most of the times yes - if anything suspicions is found.)
Hi Semitired,
This is kilrchang. sorry having some password issues but If you have IE-8. You can remove it from the computer which will take it back to IE-7 automatically. You are correct you can have Opera or FireFox installed on the computer which should work perfectly well. However if you need to uninstall IE 8 from your computer follow the following steps.
Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Programs and Features (If you are in classic view or uninstall a program if you are in Control panel home) wait for a minute or two for the list to populate. On the top left under tasks you will find the first task as View Installed Updates - Click on this. Wait for another minute or two for this list to populate. This list will show you all the updates that are currently installed on your computer. Scroll through the list the update for Internet Explorer will be listed as --> Windows Internet Explorer 8. Once you locate it left click on it to highlight it. Then click on the button above on the bar that shows organize and views where you would find a button for uninstall. Click on that the progress indicator may not show up immediately, it will take some time but wait for it to complete. Once it finishes you will be prompted to restart the computer. Click restart now. Your computer will reboot and give you a message configuring updates (keep in mind this will take some time as it has to uninstall IE8 to revert all the changes and go back to IE7.) That is normal --> Enjoy your drink in the meanwhile. Log on to your computer and wait for a while for all the icons to show up and the cursor change to a steady arrow instead of a circle going around and round.
Note: Most of the times I have seen that it will not remove any of your favorites or any passwords stored in Internet explorer but you should be fine with it either ways.
Keep me posted if this works or if it doesn't.
