In Germany, there is a system like that for trucks. Each truck has a device (similar to Easy Pass or Sunpass). When they go on/off the highway, it registers automatically. Foreign trucks (of which there is a lot on the German highway) have to prepay at the border. Germans get a bill. They rake up billions with that every year. The system was delayed 2 years because of the complexity, but about 3 years ago it started sucessfully. Of course, they had to make it complex (would not be German otherwise). It takes all kind of parameters into account (weight, # of axles, etc.).

Similar in France too (for the motorways that you pay on).
Lots of private motorists have devices in their cars, to pass straight through the checkpoints.
Beware of speeding tho. Your time and distance are clocked at each point, and if it calculates that you must have driven over the limit, you will automatically be sent a "ticket".

When it reaches that point, I will sell my vehicles and use public transport thereafter.

What public transport? In the Tampa area, you can't even find a bus, not to speak of trains, subway, tramway or anything that moves people. Escalators is the highest level of public transportation available.
