I have bought an external (WD) hard drive, and backed up my files on it.Will it automatically overwrite the existing files next time I back up? I'm assuming so, so apologies if this is a stupid question.

Hi gadusmorhua, welcome to HTG. There“s no such thing as a stupid question :) Could you tell us what you are using to back up your files, they are not always automatically overwritten. Matt

This depends on what you are using for backup? Some, like Norton Ghost or the Windows Backup assign unique names to backups. If you are the one doing the COPY, yes, COPY will replace EXISTING filenames.
