you can change the default save format to the 97-03 compatible thing, so then all ur problems are solved! (u dont really need the new format anyways!)
click the office icon top left, click word (or whatever) options
click save, click the drop down where you choose the format
choose the compatible one, and then hit ok
voila! all problems solved!
Aleeve, I think Luke knows how to do it, he just forgets to operate the dropdown at times. But you can set the 97-2003 format (or any other available format) as permanent default.
Click the Office Orb (top left) in Word > Word Options (on the bottom of the orb window) > Save > Save files in this format -- here you can set the default > OK and off you go. You have to restart Word for it to take effect.
Edit: Aleeve, rereading your post I am not quite sure whether your guidance was for a permanent default setting too. If it was intended to be that, I am not clear on how that works. Sorry, but I am kind of lost there.
