Opening files & folders

suddenly I cannot open any folders by double clicking. The " search screen" appears and I close it and have to open the folder by right clicking and using the pop-up menu. How can this be fixed without tampering with the registry?

RESTART the computer. Little nits like this usually get ironed out that way.

The computer has been started and restared many times in the last week and it does not fix the problem
