I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on one of my older desktops to continue to get some use out of it, and am now running into some issues:

My number one problem is that, just recently, the panels disappeared from both the top and bottom of my screen. My desktop icons are still there, but no panels. I can only turn the machine off mow by entering "sudo shutdown -h now" into a terminal (I have an icon on desktop).

Number two, I can't seem to get my sound drivers to install. I have a RealTek AC'97 soundcard, and when I run the install program (runs in terminal), it doesn't seem to have an effect. I believe my issue with the installer is I can't get it to run from a root terminal, and it doesn't have permission to modify the system. Also, Ubuntu doesn't detect my sound card.

Any help is appreciated :)
