Hi guys I have a Toshiba laptop that runs windows vista. When I turned on today the wireless network icon on the taskbar was gone. Does anyone knows what could have cause the problem and how to display the network icon again?
I will appreciate your help.

Right click on the Vista orb in the left bottom corner of your screen > Properties > Notification area (on top) and see whether "Network" has a checkmark in the box in front. - If NO, check it > Apply > OK

Hi whs
I went to the taskbar and start menu properties and clicked on the notification area. There was no checkmark in the box in front. I'll try to check it but nothing happens the option network is inactive.

Is the option "Network" in black text or is it grey text?

Hmmm, That means you have no network or network driver. I have to think about that.

This is a common problem and occurred frequently on my Vista box before SP1. Hasn't happened since the patch was installed.

if it's the network driver, wouldn't something show in the device manager?

Usually a reboot sorted it out. I never found out why it was happening but do believe it was a previous Windows Update.

Try the reboot first. If that does not help, do this: Type DEV into the Start search and open Device Manager (above)

1. Double click
2. Double click
3. Clck Drivers
4. Update Driver

It's possible though a bit unlikely you got a policy set to disable the icon.
Try this to see if that is the case:
1. Download the registry file at http://www.techoddity.com/down.....estore.reg
2. Run it, click continue, click yes and click ok.
3. Log out and log back in to Windows.
4. Go back to the properties and see if the option is available again.

What way fixed the problem? If it was the registry file I posted above then some program set the policy. Usually for business computers a policy gets set by the IT Department and for home computers a policy usually gets set by malware. You should run a scan with a program like Spybot to make sure you don't have malware.
