I'm totally new to Linux. I got Ubuntu 7.04 version and installed it, but i can't access the internet. I have a broadband connection with a static IP, I tried doing all the stuff in the help, that I could understand, but nothing worked. I tried the other options in the the network configuration, but it still didn't work. the net is working in vista though, on the same laptop. I heard somewhere that the setting for the linux and vista are different, I asked the customer care of my net service, but didn't knew a thing. I think there is something wrong with the modem (it's a cable internet) I'm also not getting desired speeds in vista, but that's out of the topic.

Are you able to ping your router, or another machine on your network?

If so, then I'd check your DNS settings, do an ifconfig -a to see all the settings.
