I've been trying to get a new theme for windows XP for a long time now. You know, I'm just getting sick of the Luna theme, and Classic is so retro.

But to get on topic, I've done it successfully before, a few months ago, I downloaded from Customize.org and
installed the UXtheme Patcher So I could do it, and
it worked, but then I had to a time later. Now, I've downloaded and installed the SP1-3 and tried it again. I did the same thing with the same theme Vista VG Black and I patched UXtheme.dll but when I tried to apply the theme I got VG black and all it changed was to Classic style with black coloring. Not the Vista Black color like I wanted.

Then I tried it again, but this time with the replacer method, where I manually downloaded the dll from Within Windows and I downloaded the replacer, which I took the patched version of the .dll and replaced it with the default. But it still wont work.

I've got SP3 right now and I was wondering if someone might help me, cause I want this new theme again.

Thanks in Advance

TKI

Have you tried any other themes since SP3? Try a newer one.
Oddly enough, I'm hesitant to download SP3 on my XP partition because I fear losing my custom theme.

Yes, i've tried at 1 or two more after I did this. And it still doesn't work.

and apparently you need another version of uxtheme.dll for it to work with SP3 which is the one I downloaded from withinwindows.

See if this one works, as a test,

It was released long after SP3 and the author says its fro SP3.
Fingers crossed.

Thanks, but that's not what I meant by this thread. What I meant was, does anyone have a solution for what I might be doing wrong in terms of replacing the Uxtheme dll. What I might be doing wrong and alternative sources for download.

Yes, I understand. Just wanted to see if a newer theme would work.

You might want confirmation from someone else but I think if you run sfc /scannow with elevated privileges you can start from scratch again.
You may need your XP disk.

I had a similar problem, never found a solution. SP3 screwed up so many of my day to day functions i eventually had to revert to SP2. (for a while it was stuck in 4bit color.)

satansoldier,
That's strange.
Maybe you needed an (F5) HAL installion using your Clean Install Slipstream XP3.

Kindest Regards,

It was more than just the UI, Xbox360 wont connect to media player network under sp3. I use that address bar feature that was disabled, and a few other grievances that i can't recall. I'm sticking w/ SP3 until i get a machine that would work with W7

If you like a dark theme, try the Royale Noir theme from MS. I know that doesn't fix your actual issue, but it might help you get a better theme until you get your issue resolved.
