Hi, I am new on this site, so apologize is there will be something stupid from me :)
So, I am owner of a new DELL XPS 420 computer with Vista Home on it. I put on a machine some of my favorite programs and in one moment blue screen - shit, WTF is that this is not Win95 I said... Otherwise I am not a Vista fun, so I want XP back (I told to myself). I try yesterday a few times, and everytime BLUE problems. There was a lot of wasting time, before I heard, why is blue screen here, when I want a fresh WinXP copy. I was very sad, because new machine and every time just blue screen and then restart and again and again. Start in Safe mode - nothing - still blue screen, but there was a little luck on my side - I have original Vista DVD, so I put fresh Vista copy on my PC and now works well. OK, I will learn on Vista from today till the end of my life :):):)
BUT, guys, now I have two copies of Vista on PC

windows.old doesnt work, but in windows.old there was a lot of working programs, which prepared seller and worked well. Untill yesterday because of me :( How can I change my computer to wake up with Windows.old and delete Windows ???

Hi,
No > Stupid < Questions there, afterall this is a Tech site, so you're no different to anyone, we all ask questions, apart from "How-To Geek" lol.

I am not really sure on this problem either...but why dont you put the new vista CD in and click "Repair" that should simply repair it, but i am not so sure if your programs would still be there...
but a fresh start is better anyway...

P.S Dell XPS 420 WOW! Thats a really good pc!
Remember not to put too many programs on your new vista..because i got a blue screen 5 times before on my new machine, but lucky for me i had no probs!

Good luck,

You have to remove Windows.old. Here is how http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933212 You cannot make it run again. It is a folder created during the installation of your new Vista. You can recover individual files from windows.old though.

For any files you should be able to just drag the files out of Windows.old and drop them in your documents folder.
For programs you cannot recover them. They have to be reinstalled from the disc or internet download they came from.
Dell should have included discs for all the software that came with the computer.

aloha

THX a lot guys, windows.old is gone :) but I still need your help.
When I look to my HDD free space, I see this

http://img391.imageshack.us/im.....iffak0.jpg

On the bottom of this .jpg you can see that all programs and files "cost me" 13,7 GB, but if you look at the top, there is 25 GB data. Where is the difference (12 GB). I know, that I have 500 GB HDD, but 12 GB, which are nowhere, that is strange for me.

see you...

It's your shadowstorage - that's where the recovery points are being stored. With a 500GB disk it can grow up to 75GB's. And I do not recommend to reduce it (although it is possible to do so). This is your life insurance. If you want to see the numbers, Press Start > type CMD > Right click on "cmd.exe" above > Run as Administrator. In the little black window type: VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE > press Enter. Now you see 3 numbers for C:\
1. used - that is the amount currently consumed by shadows (restore points)
2. allocated - that is probably the 12GB you are looking for
3. maximum - that is the amount to which it will ultimately grow

A shadow is written at least once a day and it takes about 1GB.

PS. Would you please put a more precise location (country) into your profile - not just Europe.
