I've never been a fan of Gateway. Everyone i've ever know with a gateway didn't last long. This HP seems to be comparable

Other than the Gateway branding, it looks like a great laptop. Do you have to have a 17" screen? Did Acer buy Gateway?
Yes, Acer owns Gateway. I have never owned a Gateway computer, laptop or desktop, so I can't comment on the brand. However, I stand by my previous statement that all laptops are fragile and the repair history bears that out:

This thing looks very expensive. Below are a couple that I found this week and are a lot cheaper. I own a Gateway Laptop and am very happy with it. What I like especially about Gateway is their support. They have excellent support and are in the US (not India) and have very swift people.

PS. Here is the Gateway link with more detailed specs http://www.gateway.com/systems.....668079.php
Jack, you don't ask for much, do you? A high-end laptop, but not to pay too much. Well, I would like an exotic sports car but I'm on a tight budget. What have you got for me? :-)
Actually, you can get a full-featured system at a great price if you are willing to wait. Just hang out at slickdeals.net, or set up some e-mail deal alerts and wait for your prize system to come along. Here is a recent deal, that may be sold out:

If you want a good deal on a decent laptop, definitely don't buy it from Best Buy unless it's one of their crazy sales they have every so often.
Personally I've been able to find good deals on http://www.deals2buy.com , they also have a dell-specific section: http://deals2buy.com/delldeals.htm
@ScottW, Gee, 750GB's for $56, that's really cheap.
@jack, I guess you will have to spend a little more because of the graphics - and that you will only find in the "heavier" laptops. But you could settle for 3GB unless you want to go into a VM setup. For normal Vista operation, the extra GIG will not really buy you much. Nevertheless, with some serious shopping you should stay below $1000. Another thought is a desktop. Here you have more options - especially regarding graphics.
Lighthouse, the $56 sale was on a WD My Book 750 GB. It was a closeout of the old model with the round LED. The new ones have a different case with a vertical LED.
whs: Jack probably wants a desktop replacement laptop with game-capable graphics and a big screen, but it can't be heavy! :-P
