Kate. Could you post a link to it please. That sounds very cheap for Maplins. Yes, I have used them a lot in the past.

Hi LH(My Geek Guardian Angel)!!!!
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.....;source=15

Hubby saw it Saturday in Telegraph, and he has been on at me to get him a small laptop so he doesn't mess mine up.
That looks so good I thought can I be imagining and what are the pit falls.
Thanks for your help as always.
Await your views.

A major drawback, is that it does not support external hard drives or thumb drives.
The main memory is a bit low for my liking.

Edit. I found this company who sell refurbished laptops at good prices,

He is just learning the ropes and only wants for the odd e. mail and his weather!!!!doh!!

It comes with the software pre-loaded.
I have not used ce, so can't advise on that.
To be honest, I think he would soon outgrow it.

Kate, Windows CE ("compact edition") is primarily used for handheld devices -- PDAs and mobile phones. I'm not surprised to see it used in a netbook, but I don't think that it's a good match. Most handheld devices that use Windows CE have a very limited set of applications. Some are written for a specific processor, so what runs on an ARM might not run on a MIPS or x86 processor. Also, some applications may be developed for a newer OS, such as CE 6.0, or an older OS, such as CE 4.0, and might not run in v5.0. It's easy to find XP apps and Linux apps, but where do you shop for Windows CE 5.0 apps? I don't know.

Thanks Scott
Sorry have been off Board,(Grandma, was required at the school sports day!)
Are you saying, that as CE5.0 is older, if something goes wrong there is no repair.??

As I said to LH, all hubby wants is very basic( I mean basic) as long as CE is easy to navigate, then he can manage, will NEVER want to eaxpand, his mobile is just about manageable as that is about 5 yrs old also just has the basics.ON/OFF.(Doesn't even wanna know how to switch mine on Ha!)
This particular one is cost effective.

Kate, having the older version of Windows CE might be a problem. If CE 6.0 has new features that can't be used in 5.0, there may be applications that will only run on 6.0 and not 5.0.

However, if hubby has no desire to expand by adding new applications, then by all means get something that works and is cost effective.

Thanks Scott
Maybe tomorrow, we can get into the city and visit Maplins, as I said early on it was the cost, that caught Hubbys eye, and he honestly, just wants to see the odd e. mail and his weather!!!!!!!
So as there appears to be no glaring nasty reason not to go with CE5.0, then I am prepared to go and look for him.
Am sure it will make me shudder!
But at the end of the day unless I could find another cost comparable new, then so be it.!!!!!!!Ha!!!!
Will let you know.

Fortunately I am only an hours time difference from you, and am in front of the computer about 16 hours a day. So yes, I should be available.
Now I will have to download and install the OS and programs that Mr Drizzle would be using.

Update!!!!!!
Bought it! at original price, has gone £20.00.
Doh!! as you both tried to tell me, a nightmare!!! It would only allow as Scott said :-
Minimal number of downloads, from some sites.
Trouble getting it to connect wireless, Bt couldn,t answer how to encrypt ,(Said they were not trained in CE Ha!!!) anyway with help of shop did get it configured but had to leave encryption OPEN!!!
E. mail is only through a POP ,not a separate e. mail that Hubby wanted.
SOOOOO, it has gone back for a refund!!!Ha!
Get ready for the next saga, what will we find I wonder????
So we can now treat this one as SOLVED!!!!!!!
Thanks for all the help.(If only we listened!!!!!)
