Hi been trying by myself for two months to solve this, need a real geek, I'm just a wanna be.

First problem:
Audio isn't working, codecs got screwed up with Directx, so I was just going to do a clean reinstall but
Second problem
My laptop isn't recognizing that it has a dvd/cd drive. It will take cd's.
My laptop came with a reinstall DVD, but since my cd isn't reading it I can't reinstall.
I have a usb external drive, but my laptop doesn't boot from usb.

So, I need a how to trick my laptop into booting from either the copied dvd somewhere on the hardrive or the usb.

Thanks. No access to a floppy drive, or pcmxia (or whatever thats called) drive.

P.S. This has been a humbling experience.

pdragonfly,

Am assuning you only have a Restore DVD and NO complete O/S CD of any flavor.

Don't know why your DVD is not working but it is going to have to work to install anything unless you are connected to a server network.

Go into the laptop Bios and re-set to the default settings which your machine came with.

Choose the Boot Device Order of CD/DVD FIRST.

Also CLEAN the DVD Restore Disc until it "shines".

Post back with make and model of machine.

Rick P.

Are you sure about your laptop not being able to boot from USB? How old is your laptop?

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A20.
I do have a os of xp pro with service pack 2. I was thinking maybe a partitioning with the new os, but not really sure how to do that. It doesn't have the drivers I would need, but then again, not sure if all my drivers are working right.

I did try and install all the updated drivers from the internet, hoping that it would solve whatever problems the computer was having, but it hasn't. (downloaded to another computer and then flashed it to the Toshiba).

The DVD stopped playing about 3 years ago. The restore DVD was inserted from its casing which was wrapped in celophane, so it was shinning new.
The computer doesn't connect to the internet (probably my doing somehow - it no longer recognizes the connection)
And to k9, yeah I'm sure it doesn't boot from usb. Tried it with my ext dvd in the usb and no matter what I choose it didn't work.

pdragonfly,

XP Pro SP2 is shipped on a CD.

If your DVD will read CDs, then try Clean Installing from the XP Pro disc.

Forget the partitioning as it just complicates your problem.

See if you can get on the net with the XP2 installed.

Probably (NOT) as you will need to install the Motherboard Chipset Driver FIRST.

Use another machine.

Go to the link below and download machine drivers.

There are (2) skews of the Toshiba Satellite A20 drivers so be sure to get the drivers for your (EXACT) model machine.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi.....modSel.jsp

Copy drivers to a USB flash memory stick.

Transfer them to the A20.

Install all drivers which apply including the latest Bios Update using Toshiba's flash utility.

Am looking for the MB spec so I can point you to the Chipset driver so post back and hang tight.

Rick P.

pdragonfly,

Believe your MB is:

ALI M1672+M1535

Main Board Chipset Driver may be found here.

http://www.driver100.com/drive.....rated.html

DO NOT ATTEMPT INSTALLING A MAIN-BOARD DRIVER UNLESS XP FAILS.

GET BACK WITH ME.

pdragonfly,

Never heard of a "pxmia" CD/DVD drive device.

You (MUST) get one the CD/DVD devices Booting and Reading.

Go into the machine Bios again and set the Boot Order to (CD/DVD First) and (ALL) other Bios settings to Default.

Make sure machine is using Power Adapter and (NOT) battery.

Do (NOT) use the slipstream CD you made.

(USE) your Original Copy of XP Pro Disc to initially setup your system.

Ensure the Disc is Clean by wiping it off with Eye Glass Cleaner or Windex.

Format the drive (Fat32 quick) when / if option comes up. This is just to see if we can get machine going.

Use above procedure and Post Back with results.

Hi,
Its a pc interface card that has a cd drive at the other end of it.
Nothing is working in the dvd/cd drive. Not anything I put in it.

My bios is set to boot the hard drive last, so it been trying to boot from the cd drives w/o success.

The 'original xp pro' is part of the installation disk, but its on a dvd, which my drive isn't reading (its not reading anything now).

Thanks

The pc is formating. Only gave Partition E as an option to format and will then install to that drive. Not sure why it didn't choose c drive, but I'll go with the flow for now. Takes 51 minutes so I'll get back to you later with results.

Thanks.

Hi,
It formated the E partition and installed windows successfully. However, Still no internet connection, no sound and the dvd/cd drive don't work.

There is a fast, very fast window that scrolls by about Realtek and I'm not sure how to freeze the screen to get what it said.
If you can tell me that, then perhaps I can find out what happened. Thanks.

Pdragonfly,

Well you are making progress GREAT !

Still need to get all the (Hidden) partitions, whatever off the hard drive. That may not be possible as I believe you really only have a copy of XP Pro Restore Disks BUT can't tell because there are (3) disks. Some may contain hardware drivers and such and one may be the actual XP Pro disk.

You will have to give more info.

Go here to get your device drivers, manual, etc...:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi.....modSel.jsp

Also you can go to http://www.bootdisk.com and burn a copy of some boot CDs with utilities on it.

DOWNLOAD AND READ YOUR Satellite A20-S259 MANUAL + SPECS FIRST !!

Post Back.

Rick P.

Right now reformating partition C and F, since E is the main partition.

Not sure what additional information you need, nor what I'm supposed to get from the great site bootdisk.com

That fast black window that loads says something about realtek and also something about ethernet. So if you can tell me how to hold that window still to read it I'll send you the info.

Thanks Rick.

Pdragonfly,

I was speaking of making a Boot CD with utilities which can completely wipe the HD of all partitions and then doing a Clean Install of XP Pro on the 40 Gig HD from scratch HOWEVER keep on doing what you are doing.
===============

I think what you are seeing in the fast black windows are notifications that some drivers are not installed like the VIDEO, SOUND, LAN, WIRELESS, MODEM, ETC., ETC.. and other devices which need to be loaded after you successfully load XP.

Upon loading XP, go to: Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and see what Devices have a RED X or Yellow ! marks. These are the Device drivers you need to install.

Remember the ones on the Toshiba site are all probably updated since you purchased your machine to include the latest Bios Update.

I am taking a special interest in your issue as you have a nice laptop computer, that when straighten out, will serve you well. I would very much like to have an old Satellite A20 computer with XP Pro just to experiment with (LOL) (LOL).

By the way, you can purchase new parts for that machine from parts dealers for very inexpensive prices now.

Think of this installation as if you were doing a complete Clean Install of XP on a machine that someone just gave you and you know nothing about the machine except from what is on the website.

I think you have more computer expertise than you let on.

Post Back as to your progress and any other questions you may have.

Rick P.

Hi,
I installed windows from the copy of the cd I had (not the dvd one that came with the computer), over C:.

So I know have two new windows installations on C: and E: with D: being the dvd/cd drive and f: being a formated and empty partition.

I used the "pause" button on the laptop and it worked, to stop the load so I could see the page I kept referring to. Here's what it says:

Intel blah blah
RTL 8139(x) 8130/810x
PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v 2.12 (021015) PXE 2 build 082

PXE-E61
Mediat test failure, test cable
PXE-MOF Exit PXE ROM

I had already downloaded all the drivers from the toshiba site and made a slipstream disk (which I didn't use as per your advice earlier) of the drivers.

Not sure where to go from here. I have not installed any drivers since the formatting of C: just now.
If you could explain further what the next steps are, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

The (PXE-MOF Exit PXE ROM) refers to network booting.
Disable this option in Bios Boot Order or reset boot order to:

First IDE CD-ROM Drive
Second Diskette Drive (A:)
Third Hard Drive (C:)
Forth Network or Ethernet Controllers or Lan OR DISABLE

Let me go to site to check something.

While I do that, Check Boot.ini file to ensure the machine is really booting to first partition. Drives switch letters with (2) partition systems and can fool you so the Boot.ini on C: partition will have to look like below.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP (LINEWRAP in this post) Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If Boot.ini file is correct, format E: partition and change CD/DVD drive letter to G:

Reboot and see what you get. I will be here after checking Toshiba site.

pdragonfly,

THIS POST IS INCOMPLETE AND NOT TOTALLY TECHNICALLY CORRECT HOWEVER CONTINUE ON AS YOU HAVE BEEN DOING.

Your manual and specs are in a PDF file.
Did you download and read them ??

Drivers for LAN must be installed and Bios flashed to latest Intel Bios version:

About This BIOS:
September 15, 2006
GC11010N.86A.0313.2006.0915.1840
Realtek* RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet MLID v3.64 (010816)

Go to pages below.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi.....dgngdgmn.0

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi.....dgngdgmn.0

If everything is a go, start installing drivers and flashing Bios.

Post Back.

Hi, I don't have a drive A (floppy). Toshiba doesn't seem to have the bios you are referring to. I did look it up at intell, but their instructions are for floppy's.

how do I get into boot.ini I just get pictures when I press f2 for hard drive, cd drive, etc.
