I just found the following pages while surfing that say the Earth was not viewed as flat in the Middle Ages and beyond:
http://thelastpsychiatrist.com.....wrong.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth

This is a bit of a shock to me as I've always heard and believed the idea that a few centuries ago people thought the Earth was flat.
I was wondering which of the two ideas (People did think there was a flat Earth or They did not) people on this forum had heard before.

I was taught in grade school, eons ago, that people used to think the earth was flat. I learned differently when I was older. I've never heard the kids mention anything about people in the Middle Ages believing the earth is flat. Now I'm curious. I will ask them if they're being taught that in school and get back to you.

I just listed the Middle Ages as an example of a time period I thought some people believed the people in that time period thought the earth was flat (I may be wrong though, I didn't double check to make sure the Middle Ages was listed) as I don't remember the time period I had heard of.
Sorry, I didn't make that more clear. I should have picked a different time period, I just didn't think to hard about it when I wrote that.

All I remember now about what I had heard was that a while ago people thought the earth was flat and somebody with a ship sailed around the world to prove it was not flat.

The origin of the flat earth is ancient. Not being funny here, but check out the history of the turtle and the elephants. Start with Hindu.
