Firstly im sorry if this has been answered before in oither threads but im not very good with computers and have no idea of the terminology.

I have a compaq f500 presario using vista as the OS and pretty much every day if its been left alone or on for few hours it crashes all the icons and any open windows all move to the bottom left corner of the screen and the tool bar goes a solid grey colour so i cant open anything from it. Also when i try and open the start menu it pops up but is solid grey/blue and so i cannot open any programs. At first it was an annoyance but now its vitally imjportant i sort this out because im doing my dissertation for uni and everytime it crashes i have to just turn the power off and not close down properly. I have used a virus checker from uni but its says its clean. Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this and how i could do it in simple idiots terms.

Kind Regards Tim

when this happens, have you tried hitting Crl-Alt-Del to allow you to bring up the task manager?

if you can do this, we can see if there is a crashed/messed up program, or even a virus.

but first we need to know if you can still get task manager

Well i currently have 76 open processes is there any way i can select them all and copy and paste them because it wont let me select them all at the moment and will take ages to copy them all manually.

unless you can take a screen capture image, and upload it to us, you will have to write them down all manually

i can say that 76 is on the "fairly high" side.

there are usually around half a dozen svchost.exe files
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....t-running/

you can take a screen capture by pressing the "prt sc" button on the key board.
then you go to ms paint and paste the image there
then save the image as a jpg
and you can create an account at either imageshack or photobucket which are both free image uploading services.

then post a link to the image, and we can take a look.

fajita69 - I just took a quick look, but am I right that you have twó antivirusprograms running?
I see PC Tools Antivirus and Sophos Antivirus.
Most antivirusprograms don't take kindly to another antivirusprogram running at the same time, as far as I know ...

I saw this "bonjour" in the list. This is an Apple network discovery tool that you probably do not need and was installed by something (probably without asking you for permission). This thing is known to conflict with Windows system processes. I highly recommend to remove it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.....oftware%29
