Aleeve,I wish your friend luck. They found I had Celiac Sprue while looking for an ulcer (which they also found).Special foods can be bought (such as bread substitute) which can pass for the real thing but are very expensive. While I never had bad symptoms,I found that just giving up beer made me feel better.I gave up the diet a long time ago (except the beer).
Ok :)
Well, the doctor told her she would never be able to eat wheat or the others again
:/
Although, when I around the age of 5, I had been on a dairy-free diet for about 3 years, and I came off that, so maybe...
She's waiting for the cure! (at the moment I understand there isn't one?)
Aleeve-My understanding is that the only cure is diet.As I stated, giving up all the hops, barley and grain in beer helped me and in just a short time!Supposedly, she will see some positives fairly quickly if she goes on the diet!I think I stated it wrongly above-I continue to not inbibe and feel better!Because sprue inflames the stomach the biggest risk is probably cancer. Some people slowly waste away because nutrients aren't injested into the body but that can be slowed down with suppliments and vitamins in cases where it's not too advanced.I believe my Dr. claimed people do improve with diet but yes, it's a life long thing.
Aleeve, diet is the only cure, but your friend need not worry. You're young and that's the easiest time to change your lives forever! There's always wine:), potatoes:), corn:), rice:), . . a whole world of tasty food! Here are links to a support group and recipe site:
