I am using Windows Vista Ultimate Edition in my Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E model laptop.

Today, after switching on my laptop, I found that there is not display of DVD drive when I open 'My Computer'.

I checked 'Device Manager'. There under the 'DVD/CD-ROM Devices', it is showing a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it on the icon of 'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17 ATA Device'.

I checked the properties. There it is showing the following message:

'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.'

I don't know what to do further. Even to format my OS, DVD drive is required.

Please help me.

I have tried system restore to the oldest restore point available. Still the same problem persists.

I also tried the for updating of the DVD driver. Windows has searched for the updated driver on internet and after 10 min, it has shown the the driver is up to date.

In Device Manager. Right click on the device and select "Update driver software".

Have a look here. I had this problem with another Pioneer drive recently and this fixed it.

It might be that you've installed conflicting drivers or more than one different kind of CD burning software (as was my case). Let us know how you go, and as with any delve into your registry, BE CAREFUL.

EDIT: Try LH's suggestion first, mine's a bit heavy handed right enough...:)

I have checked your link Colin. It has checked my system and shown that it has fixed the problem. But still my computer window is not showing DVD drive. I have restarted many times.

Get the DVD s/w and install it again would be my try at fixing this. If it doesn't work, UN-INSTALL the driver and then try to install it again.

Hi Karteek,

This was the info I was pointing at: sorry, I should have been clearer. Make sure you understand the following instructions (read them a few times) before you have a go at this.

Microsoft Windows Vista

Click Start, and then click All Programs.
Click Accessories, and then click Run.
Type regedit, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.

On the Edit menu, click Delete.

When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Hope this helps,

Col
