Missing Operating System with Vista32...

Hi,

I'm a novice with computers so hopefully this will make sense...

I now have a problem while trying to log in to my PC and I get this black scree with the error "missing operating system" So I did these steps:

a. Get your Vista32 installation DVD and pop it into your drive.

b. Then restart your computer.

c. Press a key when you are prompted.

d. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then hitNext

e. Click Repair your computer

f. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next

However, there is NO operating system to choose, it is blank!

Any suggestions what I should do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all the help!!!

Follow these instructions to access the Command Prompt (and backup your files if needed). You can use your Windows Vista install DVD:

With the command prompt, follow these steps to try to repair your system:

Change directory to W:\boot, where W: is your Windows Vista install DVD:

cd /d W:\
cd W:\boot

Run the following command, where C: is your System partition:

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 C:

Then run:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Then restart your computer. If it is still not working tell us and we will try to think of another solution.

Hi,

I have tried to change the directory to W:\boot and nothing. I get the message "The system cannot find the drive specified"

So I cannot continue since this inital request doesn't work. Can you help further? Thanks.

When you get to the command prompt, type:

notepad

This will open Notepad. Go to File - Open. Click on "Computer", at the left of the Open window. Check the letter of your install disk, close notepad, and use that letter, i.e.:
cd /d E:\ or
cd /d F:\ or whatever it is.
