Hi there,
Having lots of problems trying to get my desktop back. Recently had spyware/adware and disposed of that, but ever since, everytime I sign on to Windows Vista it takes a while, but all that comes up is " My Documents " in a quarter page box on the left hand side of the screen. The rest is just black.
After some advice I've....run system restore, rebooted in safe mode and tried last known good configuration, with no change. It was also suggested I open Task Manager and have a look, but when I try to open I get " Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator ". So I'm stuck...and need some help, please !!. How do I get things back to normal ?. In simple terms if possible.
Many Thanks
Fox

Whatever bug you had seemed to have made a mighty mess. System restore is a good way to get out of this. But restoring to the "last known good configuration" may not help because that may still be an infected restore point. The restore program does not know that. If you know, when the infection occured, you can go back to a restore point from before that date (if such a restore point still exists). If not, you will have to reinstall your system. But make sure you save all your files before to an external device (disk, flash drive, DVD).
PS: 1. I don't see how task manager could help you in this situation nor reboot in safe mode. 2. In your topic you say "Taskbar". What's the question on that?

Tried the system restore a few times, hasn't helped. Just mentioned the taskbar, because that's missing as well as the desktop. So when I close all programmes etc, I have a blank screen and can't get back into anything !!. I have to say that yesterday the desktop came back, don't know how, but after logging off and then logging in this morning it was gone again.
As my PC came with Vista already install, I don't think I can re-install it, can I ?. I have very limited skills when it comes to PCs, so it's all into the unknown for me !!!.

What make is your PC (HP, Dell, Gateway, etc)? You can of course reinstall. But in order to do this right, give me the info first. Apparently your PC did NOT come with an istallation disk.
For the taskbar: hover the curser over the very bottom of your screen. It may appear. If yes, right click on it and check "Lock the Taskbar". But you seem to have bigger problems than that. We'll get it fixed. Don't worry.

My computer is a Packard Bell PC355, unfortunately no installation disc was supplied ( Vista was already on the PC from Currys ). Still no sign of the taskbar ( or anything else ! ). Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Well, most likely you can burn your own installation disk from the recovery partition. I am really not familiar with Packard Bell. This is a french or british make, I think. Try this: Type REC or RECOVERY into the search field of Start. See whether something like "Recovery Disk Creation" or "Recovery Manager" turns up. If yes, go there. You should get a Wizard for burning a Recovery Disk. Have 2 DVD-R's handy (not CD's - you would need 12 CD's). See whether you can burn them. Then at least we could go from there and you would have a safe base.
If the trick in the Start menu does not work, try this. Start your "Help and Support Window" (the green thing) > type RECOVERY > go to "Frequently asked Questions" > go to "How to create a Recovery Disk" and follow from there (it's obvious). That should also get you to the Wizard. (but then again, Packard Bell may be different).
Once you were able to create the 2 Recovery DVD's (or not) come back and we'll go to the next step.
PS. Sorry I was late - we had a power outage (big thunderstorm).

First of all I'd like to say many thanks for trying to help, I appreciate you taking the time. It must be a never ending job !!.
Next...I seem to have righted the problem !!. Can't remember exactly how I did it ( it was in the early hours !! ), but.....I switched the computer on, continually pressed the F11 button and initiated some kind of Windows/ Packard Bell recovery process ?. I ended up losing some files, but hey, at least my head's stopped hurting !!.
Thanks Again

Fox, but you still should have a recovery disk for "next time". Did you try to find the Wizard and did you burn the CD's. If this is not possible, I would ask Packard Bell to send you a recovery disk. Without a recovery disk, you are a high wire artist without a net.

Btw: Found out that Packard Bell is Dutch now 75% owned by Acer/Gateway.

One way to get the taskbar back press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and the go to file, next go to the New Task (Run...) and type in explorer. This should bring back the taskbar unless explorer.exe is missing.
