Everytime i open up a word document in the new word 2007 and go to type a /,?,>,<,[,[ etc word ends up typing the wrong symbols. I thought at first maybe my keyboard was messed up because i just got a new computer but it works fine when i type in emails etc. I'm not using a weird font, just times new roman but i dont know what to do since i use this for school projects and copying and pasting every symbol from somewhere else is tedious and tiresome.

This will be your language settings. Down in the bottom, what language does it say it's using? For me it says "English (UK)". If it's not that, then maybe it's your font.

it is neither of those mine says English (Canada)and my font is times new roman. But i have found that sometimes when i start a new document, it works fine and other times it doesnt, and sometimes one that didn't work fine one day works ok the next even though no changes have been made. Its really really annoying.

rather than the / i get the e with the diagonal dash (its a french symbol) on it and when i use the > i get " and < gives me ' and the " gives me the c with the diagonal dash (also a french symbol) and no im not using the french language for it ive already checked. but sometimes when i try to use these keys they work just fine with the same font and everything so i really dont know what is wrong with my microsoft word.

English (Canada) can use several types of keyboard setting, one of them is Canadian French. I suspect this is the cause. Try change the keyboard to US instead. You can change it either via:
* the office language bar or
* from 'control panel'/'regional and language options'/'keyboard and languages' then click on the 'change keyboard' button

Hope this help

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I'm wondering if you've found a fix for this? It is so frustrating, I'm an on-line student doing an Advanced Medical Transcription course and have been ready to throw the computer out the window. I have changed my language settings to English US but that seems to slow the keyboard down. I'm not the fastest typer by any means, but the keyboard doesn't register my keystrokes, leaving out spaces, letters, even hard returns which makes producing a document that is seriously flawed. So, if anyone out there has had this problem and fixed it, I would sure love to know how you did it.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Go to Control Panel, click on Date, Time and Regional Options, then Regional and Language option, and select the correct one. It is usually a bug that alters these from your standard settings. Pam.

I had the exact same problem - getting French symbols - so you have to get out of English Canada. I followed the instructions babmsan gave you - go to Control Panel, clicked on the date, time and regional area/keyboard and languages and changed everything to English US - specifically, the keyboard - but it kept going back to English Canada....I then realized that while doing all this in the Control Panel - you also have to change your area from Canada to USA - and IT WORKED!! No more French symbols.
