I just read your article on the new MSE v1.0 and was wondering about your comment about making sure that no other anti-virus or spyware programs were running on the machine. Does this mean just during install or must this program be used in lieu of all other security programs (AVG, Malwarebytes, etc)? If these programs are used in a non-auto mode (scan on demand only) does that matter?

It's "in lieu". But before you jump on it, you might want to study how well it performs: http://arstechnica.com/securit.....inners.ars
weybrew, you should only have one real-time scanner at any given time. Having more than one might work, but it's bad for performance. You can have as many on-demand scanners as you wish.
whs, the link your provided does not have a performance review of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It says:
It's worth noting that the Microsoft solution tested here went the way of the dodo three months ago and in doing so, Redmond left the market for paid, consumer solutions. Microsoft Security Essentials, the company's free real-time consumer antimalware solution, is almost ready for release and is rumored to arrive as early as this week.
