I want to use the new Microsoft Security Essentials released today, but I am presently using AVG free version which I am happy with. My questions are twofold, can both exsist on my machine, and before installing MS essentials it tells me to not have any other protection running on my machine, does that mean actually running at the time or have the AVG package on my machine?
Thank you,
Harry

Hello hkosiol----- I've been looking into MSE the last couple of days after a friend of mine who is an IT guy recommended it to me. He actually told me to take everything out of my machine, ( he knows what I have in it now, which is AVG 9.0 free, and Malware-bytes, and Super-Anti Spyware, and Spybot.) , and to then install MSE. I'm hesitant because I'm not a HUGE fan of things from Uncle Bill and his narly little Dwarfs up in Redmond. But I use their products. To answer your question more directly, here's an article that I found on another site called Super User, that How To Geek does some work back and forth with occaisionally. If you look down the right side of THAT page, you'll notice links to other articles that might pertain to your needs, and questions also.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck! I'm going to make the switch, and take my AVG off, and give the MSE a try.

It is not recommended to install 2 different security applications in a computer. Like you said the other security application will ask you to remove the existing one. Even if you were able to install, it will cause system instability and crashes.
So, it is always recommended to remove the one you have in your computer and install the new one.

I've been using it for a few weeks now. I have it installed on 2 desktops running Windows 7 Pro x64 and one laptop running Windows 7 Pro x86. It seems to be a solid program and has good reviews. The only thing i hate is that a FULL scan takes hours and hours. Microsoft has said that they will fix that in a future update so here's hoping for that.

As far as installing it, it's best to uninstall all other anti virus apps first, Reboot then install it. There is no need to uninstall windows defender as MS says Security Essentials uninstalls it anyways. Hope this helps.

On my personal experience, msse is good but has some disadvantages as well. The interface of msse is quite easy, but it misses some components. for e.g., u cannot pause ur scanning. U cannot see the viruses which have been detected until the whole of scanning completes. It doesn't detects the viruses automatically when a removable media is inserted, like pendrive, etc.. the scanning speed is a bit slow, but the virus cleaning speed is very-very slow.
but alternately, the antivirus has a good database as it is capable of detecting almost every virus. doesnt needs a frequent updating like kaspersky. It is quite light weighted application as well.

@ InDiSent, the new (10/24) beta takes just as long for a full scan :(
I think Defender is suspended as opposed to deleted.

@ OP, if you want to try something alongside MSSE, try DriveSentry

theres an old saying, if its not broken don't try fix it ............ i use various Anti-virus programs on different PC's, for instance ESET NOD 32 on one, AVast home edition on another and avira on the other, i tried MSEE on the NOD 32 PC and ran it for a few days, then went back to NOD 32, i prefer its speed for one and its real time scanning i find to be better than MSEE. but hey whatever keeps those pesky viruses away :)

I got a spray that is supposed to keep viruses away. Maybe I should try it on my laptop :)

LH, that spray is for your throat. LoL

OP, I use MSE on a Win7 system. Works good, but as the others said, don't mix it with any other security suite. Additional scanners like SAS or OK though.
