I recently purchase and put together my first computer with the following parts:

2x OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) (8GB total)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

My system kept crashing, so I removed the RAM, and started Memtest-ing each stick. From left to right (on the motherboard, when installed,) slots 2 and 4 work with all my sticks of RAM, but slots 1 and 3 work with only selected sticks. They passed with some sticks, and not with others. Then retesting in slots 1 and 3, I got different results; errors with sticks that had worked, and passes with sticks that hadn't.

I've placed sticks of RAM into slots 2 and 4, and my system appears to be stable, and passes the Memtest. Is the problem I have most likely with my motherboard? The slots aren't dead - they do pass sometimes. Could this be a BIOS error - where those two slots sometimes run the RAM too fast, or something like that? I'm fairly good with computers, but haven't touched BIOS much, so they remain a mystery to me. I would just like a second opinion before I spend money for shipping and time waiting for a new motherboard.

I can provide more details if they'd help. Let me know. Thanks for your input!

Read ALL the [ CON ] reviews concerning the Memory.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....6820227298
That memory and your MB do NOT play well together it appears.
---
Read the Manual that shipped with the machine concerning Bios Setup.
---
Also, Update the Bios to the Latest Revision.

Wow, thanks for catching that... I'm kicking myself for missing that. I guess it's the memory I'll be returning.

However, is there a reason that two slots will run one stick fine, while the other two can't even run one?

Also, do you know anything about this memory? There are no reviews on Newegg for it.

Although the Manual doesn't specifically say it, memory slots DDR2_1 and DDR2_3 should normally be filled before memory slots DDR2_2 and DDR2_4 modules are installed due to Dual Channel Mode, MB Electrical Layout and Memory Addressing. To put it in simple terms, the MB was not really designed to run with one module of memory.

See Page 16 Memory Layout Chart in Manual plus Flex Memory Note Concerning Dual Channel Mode.

Thanks again! That makes sense. Now I just need to find 8GB memory that will work reliably at 1066...

BEFORE sending the memory back, go into Bios and [ Manually ] Set Memory to:
Timing: 5-5-5-18 [ Also try AUTO with voltage set below ]
Voltage: 2.2V [ MANDATORY VOLTAGE for your memory modules ]
---
May save you some grief as I'll [ Bet You ] the Bios is NOT Setup like this. :) :)

Well, thanks for all the help, but it still won't run. I'm going to return it, and purchase something else. Any suggestions? Nearly all of the most rated memory sticks on Newegg have a ton of poor reviews of them not working...

Searched and Sorted by Your Motherboard Model + DDR2 1066
Please read reviews.

Another possible option, run only 4 Gig if using 32Bit O/S.
32Bit O/S will use less than 4 Gig because of address limit.

Thank you SO much for all your help!I looked through that memory's reviews, and ordered it. I am running Windows 7 RC 64-bit, so I can use all of my 8GB RAM. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, and you won't be hearing from me again. =]

I purchased the above memory, tweaked my BIOS a bit, and now my 8GB runs quite nicely. Thanks again for all your help!
