(Solved) Memory upgrade doesn't work
(46 posts)- Remove Solved Status
Programs actually loading tends to be more disk I/O bound than anything, as in order to load a program it has to be loaded from the HDD into RAM. This is where a RAM upgrade can help as it reduces the necessity for Windows to 'page' data that should be in RAM out to the hard drive, so meaning it can load your program instead. As for Administrator - well, the default account you set up when you first get the machine should be admin. Check in Control Panel>User Accounts and see what it says about you. It should say something like <your name> Administrator. If this doesn't work, XP has a security hole in that there is a built in administrator account that can only be accessed in Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly after startup and select Safe Mode). This is usually not password protected as it has to be done separately from the main admin account.

oh, that's what you mean by having it set up, all "tweaked". Lots of confusing stuff in viper's site for basic user. Also, most of it says it is for XP Home and Pro. Never mentions Media Center Edition, what I have. Even thou some info places I look say I have Home, or Pro, it says Media Center Edition on a sticker on my machine, and at My Computer>Properties>General tab also, so I'm going with that. Viper also says to be logged in as administrator when trying things, or make sure you have those rights, I guess in case you screw something up you can fix it. I still cannot figure out how to "log in" as administrator. I look, and it says I am the administrator. Am I supposed to used my email address for the admin. name? I can't find no "box" where I can write name in, or check, in order to log in. I've tried a few things, going back and forth, accomplishing nothing.

When I do Control Panel>User Accounts, it says I am the Computer Administrator. But it doesn't say "log-in".

Hey guys....have a feeling this stuff now should be under a new thread? After all, I started this one because the memory upgrade caused comp to go south, now it's okay. I can throw another quickie at anyone out there. My taskbar is too "thick". Yes, I know, put the cursor on the top edge till it goes to a double arrow, and drag it downward. Doesn't work. If I drag it up, it will make it thicker that way, but when I drag it down, it stops at the 'double-width'. I put this out at another site, and that is what everyone said, and even I knew to do that.
