You do not need the the date of date of manufacture to combine them into 1
It is a desktop computer, yes?

Normally, if you look inside the computer, you will see a wide flat cable. It will be attached to your hard drive. Just before that will be another connector that can plug your other hard into. It may be necessary to change a jumper(connection) on the 2nd drive, to make it work

You'll need to set the jumpers on the back of the drive to Master and Slave (should be a diagram on the drive itself). Set your boot drive to Master and the other one to Slave.

Thanks Budohorseman, he will only need to change the 2nd drive to slave. The 1st one is set.

Ah No. That's a whole new set of problems. Which would you prefer to use if you had only one choice, 98 or XP?

Do you have an XP installation CD.
And how much data do you have on the 2 hard disks that you want to keep?

I need some help from the XP guys please. Is 10Gb enough for a system drive?

In that case you will want to set your 40 GB drive as the slave drive. Once you do that, your system will boot from the 10 GB drive with XP and the 40 GB drive will be given the next logical drive (most likely it will be your D: drive). Since your new C: drive will be so small, when you reinstall your programs do not used the default settings (which will be c:\Program Files\Name) rather change the C: to D: and leave everything else the same. The programs will just go D:\Program Files\Name and XP will have access to them. All of your documents that are on the 40 GB drive will now be residing on your D: drive.

EDIT: @Lighthouse, it's enough for the OS but not much else.

10GB is enough for a system partition with XP. but you know how fast it will fill up. If my memory serves me correct the install of XP is just under 2GB. So depending on how many and what programs you install it will fill up fast.

Edit: looks like you got to it first ....

Thanks guys. I was figuring to suggest what Budohorseman said but was unsure if 10Gb was enough (for C:).

oldsalt, since you don't have an XP install CD, you won't be doing a reinstall, so here are my suggestions:

* remove the 40 GB drive from the old system, and install it as the second drive in the new (XP) system.
* The 10 GB drive will remain your XP boot disk and will be your C: drive.
* The 40 GB drive will be a data drive and should be the D: drive.
* There are ways to make XP see the two drives as one 50 GB partition, but I don't recommend it.
* Eudora will run on XP just fine. Your mailboxes, attachments, and embedded folders will all be on the D: drive.
* You will have to install Eudora under XP, then either import your mailboxes from the old location, or copy the folders over to the new location.

Now I see as I was typing this long-winded response that others have responded. At least we are in agreement.

I have an old 98 machine in mothballs, still works on 40 gig hard drive. Was messing around with it 1 day, seeing if I could install xp. If I recall my vidio/graphic card needed to be upgraded to at least 128 mb,that may be an issue with old salt. BTW old salt, you ever in the Navy?,I was, good luck matey.

Windows XP does not like being transfered to another computer.
If you do it will likely not boot and you will need to a repair install with the installation cd to make it boot on the new hardware. A repair install can cause problems like erasing some configuration settings and messing up installed programs.
The reason this happens is because Windows XP only installs the disk controller driver for the hardware it's installed to and when moving to another computer with a different disk controller it will not work. There are also other things like the HAL that can be different from one computer to another also.

Windows 98 is better about being transfered but it can still have problems.
It will boot but not always to normal mode. Sometimes when transfered it will only work in Safe Mode.

recapping some advice..............
leave my 10 gb drive with XP on my new computer.install my 40 gb drive to my new computer
and make it a slave.
Questions:
1.All of my programs on the old drive(40gb)will not be recognized by XP as they were created
with windows 98...Is this correct?
2.everytime I put a program on the slave dr.will I have a choice to change the address to
D from C ??Does this include netscape and IE ?
3.Is there a away to change the address permantely from C to D or is this a bad idea?
4.I'm not tech savy so this process would have to be explained step by step to me......
sorry about that but I am in my 70"s Oldsalt
