Upon pressing power button, hard drive indicator flashes once. Hard drive makes short start up sound and then silence. Cooling fan runs. Black display. Everything was working perfectly with no indication of a problem only minutes earlier.

This might sound weird ... but I have seen it work several times.

* Unplug the power cord

* Take out the Laptop Battery and plug the power back in ... and see if it comes on.

Wow. Thanks again. I tried it again and it worked. I had tried everything I could think of and had become somewhat desperate.

Great! You may want to run the laptop on your battery and completely drain it ... they last longer and cause less problems if you drain them to 0 every 3 months or so.
